The QBE AcceliCITY Resilience Challenge is one of the top startup accelerators of its kind in the world. We work with entrepreneurs from around the world who have developed some of the most promising solutions to create more sustainable and resilient communities.

This volunteer opportunity seeks evaluators for a pivotal moment in the AcceliCITY program-- selecting the startups that will be invited to join this year's cohort.

Volunteers will receive materials, including instructions and applications for review, by May 10th. Each volunteer will then have until May 23rd to review their assigned applications and complete the evaluation form for each applicant. This can be done independently on the volunteer's schedule, but all evaluations must be completed and submitted by the May 23rd deadline.

Though the exact number of assigned applications may vary based on the number of applicants and evaluators, we aim to assign 6-8 applications per evaluator. Each evaluator can approach their review in their own way, we hear that it generally takes 20-30 minutes to review and evaluate a single application. Some evaluators will block one time to review all and submit their evaluations within hours or days of receiving the materials, others will spread the work out over nearly two weeks. The approach you take, is completely up to you.

In partnership with Earthwatch, join us in one of two locations—in northern Utah or southeastern Arizona—to study owl ecology. During the day, you’ll measure owl habitat—locating tree cavities and taking GPS and other measurements. At night, you’ll listen for the low-pitched ‘boop’ of the Flammulated Owl, the high-pitched laughing of Elf Owls, or the non-stop ‘reverse signal’ tooting of the Northern Saw-whet owl while you survey for, capture, and band owls that fly above you. Data from raptor migration sites and other surveys indicate declines in American Kestrel populations across North America. Since 2014, HawkWatch International (HW) has worked with hundreds of community scientists to investigate this decline by monitoring the species during its breeding season by monitoring nest boxes.

Recently, HWI has expanded the program to look at other potential reasons for decline, such as diet.

Understanding what American Kestrels eat and if diets differ across landscapes can help us understand how diet might relate to their decline. To document diet, HawkWatch International (HWI) biologists install small cameras in select American Kestrel nests to record parents delivering food to nestlings. This opportunity involves reviewing nest box footage and recording data on prey items and their delivery. Sign up here: https://hawkwatch.org/sign-up-to-be-a-remote-cares-community-scientist/
