On Monday, January 21, 2019, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the National Day of Service, community volunteers will join forces in North Natomas to help 50 kids transform bike parts into 50 ready-to-ride bicycles.50 Bikes for 50 Kids is a community service event that matches 50 well-deserving youth with teams of volunteers to assemble a bike for each child on the team. These “volunteer engineers” hail from local community organizations and businesses, and range from bike enthusiasts to mechanical novices. Prior to the event, volunteers attend a class taught by professional bicycle mechanics in order to learn how to construct a bike. The mentors pass this knowledge onto the youngsters who then help assemble the bike and get valuable hands-on experience on teamwork, building and the construction of a bicycle.
United, the volunteers are able to give local youth the gift of healthy recreation that encourages both sustainable transportation and a better future -- for the young recipients and the community as a whole.

• Registration & Finish Area Volunteer: Orient bike recipients and bike builders before and after their bike build. This is will include distributing t-shirts, providing helmet fittings, taking pictures, and more. Volunteers will be trained. - 4 hour time commitment
o morning session 7:30 am – 12 pm

Each year, San Diego River Park Foundation volunteers remove more than 200,000 pounds of trash from our River. Without our amazing volunteers, this trash would be left to pollute native animal habitats, create unsightly piles in our parks and public spaces, leach contaminants into the water, and could be washed out in to our ocean and beaches!YOU can help with this critical work! The Clean & Green Team is a group of enthusiastic volunteers that focus on cleaning up storm water debris and litter. Volunteers use pickers and gloves to pack this trash into garbage bags, then haul it to a dumpster.
Join us as we work to remove trash and debris from a tributary of the San Diego River, Forester Creek. This is a great activity for people interested in clean water and a clean habitat for the plants and animals that call the river home.
Location: Meet at the Santee Public Works building at 9534 Via Zapador Santee, 92071. Please see the Google map for visual location: http://goo.gl/maps/PxjrP

Jersey Trees for Life's ongoing Hedgerow Campaign started in 2007 and has since seen around 50km of native hedgerow planted island-wide, thanks in no small part to the support of corporate and public volunteer teams. The Hedgerow Campaign was launched in 2007 and has been going strong ever since. Funded by members, sponsors and donors, Jersey Trees for Life has planted thousands of metres of native hedgerow species, comprising the likes of blackthorn, field maple, hawthorn, holly and wild privet.
The campaign operates on an annual cycle. The late autumn to winter months, from November to March, are when planting takes place. From April to September, the team shifts its focus to maintenance, with every hedgerow receiving two visits per year. Autumn months are then spent assessing land in preparation for the following campaign.
Healthy hedgerows are a vital part of our ecosystem, providing a surprisingly diverse range of benefits to wildlife, landowners and the wider community. They reduce soil erosion by acting as a barrier to water runoff while stabilising the soil surface with their roots, which help absorb water faster. This is just one of the ways in which hedgerows can serve as a means of flood mitigation, in addition to reducing silt in waterways and absorbing and transpiring soil water.
The role of hedgerows as windbreaks is another crucial factor, especially on a windswept isle like ours, as strong, cold winds can cause all manner of crop damage. Shelter keeps soil warmer too, which in turn can extend the growing season.
Increased biodiversity is naturally another major benefit, with hedgerows providing food and shelter for a vast array of birds, mammals and insects – including pollinators such as bees, which are fundamental to crop yields. Hedgerows also provide a natural habitat for predators of crop pests, leading to reduced need for pesticides.
Thanks to the campaign, an island-wide network of wildlife corridors – connected areas of habitat across human-dominated areas – has been created, helping our local wildlife to thrive.
