At a time in April or May 2018 which is convenient for volunteers and the weather is good, we will clean and plant our small urban green space (approx. 32' x 32' square). The grass area is a safe, cozy and colorful place in a dense urban downtown area. It is used as a lunch and play area during summer art camp. The colorful seating provides a reading area for children who have borrowed a book from the adjacent little free library. The raised bed along the edges of the small lawn are filled with flowers and herbs which are used to teach natural dyeing, cooking with herbs, and Girl Scout Nature Badge classes. It is a small area with a big impact on the community! Volunteers are needed to rake and restore the space, turn over the soil in the raised beds and work in soil enhancements, and touch up the paint on the wooden tables.

The Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup brings together over 3,000 volunteers each year to pick up litter, remove invasive species and assist with park maintenance. Residents are drawn to the popular Charles River Cleanup from a desire to give back to their community while enjoying the beauty and wildlife along the Charles River. Volunteers build on the connections they establish during this day of stewardship by returning to the Charles to exercise, play and enjoy nature throughout the year. In 2016 and 2017, the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup was recognized by American Rivers for the Most Volunteers Mobilized.

The day of the Cleanup volunteers will register and once checked in with their team leader at 9:00 am, volunteers will be supplied trash bags, gloves and pickup sticks to discard trash and remove invasive species until 12:00 pm. Snacks will be provided. While supplies last, each volunteer will also receive an Official 2018 Charles River Cleanup T-shirt designed by a student of Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

At the completion of the Cleanup at 12:00 pm, volunteers will gather for a picnic and celebration tentatively scheduled for Fiedler Field (near Hatch Shell Park). Speakers, including CRWA Executive Robert Zimmerman, State Senator Brownsberger and other project partners will thank volunteers for their dedication to making the Charles River a beautiful place to live, work and play.

The mission of the Godwit Days non-profit is to bring enjoyable, educational events to our community that allow children and adults alike to explore nature and learn about birds and our natural environment. We have an incredible number of different bird species in our area which means it is important to protect local habitats. The events Godwit Days provides help to teach participants about species while having fun exploring local areas. During the festival, our venue provides a community location where people can come and learn about local programs and government agencies that help to maintain and protect the health of wildlife and our natural resources, see live birds of prey on display, and enjoy student artwork. We provide numerous events for youth that introduce them to the world of birding and nature. This is a large community event, 7 days long with our onsite location for 3 days, this will be our 23rd year!

We need volunteers to help in the set up of our vendor hall and registration room. This will include organizing registration materials - carrying materials in, sorting, alphabetizing. It will also involve setting up our merchandise display - unpacking, folding, organizing. It may also include help in setting up the cafe. Other tasks as needed.

Seed2Seed and Living Hope Church are partnering together to host Kernersville Earth Day 2018. We value this community event and are excited about new opportunities for education that we are bringing to the event this year.
Kernersville Earth Day will be hosted on the 7-acre property of Living Hope Church. The property boasts a large field for vendors, parking, and Seed2Seed’s Sustainable Education Farm. Inside the building there is a craft room, large conference room for speakers, and bathroom facilities.
Our event will be different than previous years in that education will the main theme. The event will be free and open to the public on April 20th from 9am to 4 pm. We have speakers with presentations, workshops, and demos (indoors and outside) scheduled throughout the day. An art contest is being held for local Kernersville k-12 students with prizes for winners. All vendors are required to have an educational component to their booths. Food trucks will be onsite as well as a local juice shop. Interactive garden tasting tours will be given from Seed2Seed. The city of Kernersville will have an interactive river simulation truck on site. In addition, Kernersville Earth Day will be a ZERO WASTE EVENT!
What we aim to accomplish is to bring the Kernersville community together through education, service, and partnership. Sustainable practices that close holes and gaps in areas like waste, education, and specific community needs are of high priority to us. Community building allows us to broaden our reach and resources so that more needs get met in the end for all. Ultimately, we seek to collaborate with people and organizations in our community to serve and connect Kernersville around Sustainability and Earth Day is a great opportunity to do that.
We are asking that Kernersville businesses would support local sustainability through Kernersville Earth Day 2018. Areas of opportunity for partnership are supplying volunteers for the event, offering a workshop/demo/ or Earth Day related presentation the day of the event, in kind donations, and monetary sponsorship of the event. The total cost of the event is $6000 and any amount towards that would be greatly appreciated. This is a small amount for an event this size and the hosts of this event take no profit from that amount. Your donation would be a tremendous help towards our goals!
