Impact and goal of the organization:

We run One of India's Happiest, Remotest Schools! Our pilot school called Happy By Nature School runs purely as a social enterprise – focused on good education and on changing the lives of the less privileged children.

We welcome volunteers to help us in this mission. There are some definite shortcomings of rural education. Every effort to overcome those shortcomings - by way of regular or occasional interventions, through volunteering programs is welcome.

The current volunteering program is scheduled from Mon, 24 Mar 25 to Sat, 29 Mar 25. (Volunteers will be required to reach the school by Sat, 22 Mar).

Main tasks:

As a volunteer, you shall be expected to:
a) Travel to Devidhar, Dunda (in Uttarkhand) and engage in activities with the children and teachers, for a duration of 2 weeks or longer
b) Curate your program in detail, in consultation with us. Let us know any teaching aids, instruments, stationery etc. that you may need in the process
c) Undertake activities beneficial to the children and aligned with the objectives of the school

Time zone:
Volunteers get upto 5 hours on school days. The dates are planned in advance, by the school management setting aside this time from the normal routine.

Volunteering programs take place generally between:
- 09:30am to 03:00pm (Oct to Mar)
- 08:30am to 02:00pm (Apr to Sep)
(India Standard Time)

Duration and frequency:

The current program is of one week duration. Programs of longer durations are possible in consulation with us.

Agenda:

We encourage volunteers to take up any of the following activities (in discussion with us). The target group is a group of about 25 students in the 10-14 year age group. The children primarily speak and understand Hindi (and some English):
• Technical Workshops – That help students to improve the analytical, creative, problem-solving, decision -making skills e.g. Making Mathematics more meaningful, Science Workshops, Computer Skills or Programming Tips and Tricks, Scientific experiments etc.
• Creative Workshops – Essentially in areas that help in exploring body movement, expression, creativity and social confidence E.g. through Art, Dance, Music, Theatre, Photography and Video Making, Translating Emotions into Pictures,
• English Writing & Reading, Interview and Language Development, Poetry Recitation, Interactive Story-telling, Book Reading, Debating etc.
• Socially Relevant Projects – Short projects in areas such as environmental awareness, waste recycling, garbage disposal, reduce-reuse-recycle plastics, water conservation, afforestation etc.

Volunteers are kindly requested to [bring/wear/have/etc.]:

Clothes appropriate for the season with the awareness that the weather is often unpredictable in the Himalayas. Volunteers are required to dress appropriately for the school environment and be respectful to the local customs and traditions. (Shorts / skirts shorter than knee length and/or revealing dresses are not permitted).

We will provide:

Given that it is a small school in a remote area, the logistics around travel & stay are somewhat difficult. Travel ahead of Dehradun is only possible by road (takes about 5 hours). Volunteers are expected to travel to the school at their own expense. We will guide you along the way and arrange their reception at the school premises.

We also accomodate volunteers in our guest rooms, at very nominal charges. Rooms are often shared between two people of the same gender. Simple vegetarian meals are provided. These are made available at nominal charges (not exceeding INR 750 per person per night)

Additional comments:

We expect all voulnteers to strictly abide by our Social Media Policy.

We appreciate that volunteers can bring their wide array of experiences and skills to the children. The benefits flow both ways. Children get to interact with people from across the country and the world, learn about their perspectives and acquire useful knowledge that may otherwise not be taught in the classroom. Volunteers get exposed to realities and hardships of rural life, get an opportunity to serve those less privileged and can go back enriched with myriad of experiences themselves.

Ocean Debris Cleanups: We are actively addressing Kauaʻi's marine debris issue through cleanup events. In 2024, over 300 volunteers, supported by 28 local organizations, successfully removed over 100,000 pounds of marine debris from Kauaʻi's marine ecosystems.Plastic Upcycling Program: We believe in turning challenges into opportunities. Through our plastic upcycling program, powered by precious plastic machinery, we upcycled over 1,000 pounds of ocean plastic in 2023, transforming it into functional and beautiful creations. This initiative not only addresses plastic pollution but actively involves the community in creating a cleaner, greener future.
