Join us in helping to "beautify" our new River Center at Grant Park! You can help take care of this exiting new nature education center and eco-park by joining the community in vegetation removal and weeding, trash pick-up, graffiti removal, and occasional planting. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a flexible schedule to contribute 2 hours of service. Events are held every Thursday from 8 AM to 10 AM.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the event:
- Bring trash grabbers, loppers, hand pruners, shovels, and gloves (if you have them)
- Attire: Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required
- Other Items to Bring: Reusable water bottle, hat, other forms of sun protection
- Weather: Light rain will not cancel the event
- For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event
- There are restroom facilities at this location
- All ages are welcome, but those under 16 need supervision. Ages 16 and 17 are allowed alone but with a parent signature.

After the Grant Family generously donated 17 acres of land, The San Diego River Park Foundation and our community worked on plans to turn the abandoned sand mining pit into an exciting new nature education and eco-park in the heart of Mission Valley. The dream turned into a reality. The River Center at Grant Park, in its last phase of construction, is anticipated to open in Fall of 2024! It will act as a home base for Education and other programs and is set to provide free nature learning experiences along the San Diego River to 10,000 students per year.

Join the San Diego River Park Foundation's Garden Club twice a month to bring community members together to learn about native plants, gardening, and taking care of a native plant landscape. The Point Loma Native Plant Garden is a hidden gem that features many rare and endangered native plant species that are found along the San Diego River. Some of the plants in the collection are not found naturally anywhere else in the world but in our region.

Located just uphill from the San Diego River estuary, the garden is part of the City of San Diego's Collier Park West between Ocean Beach and Point Loma. This garden also features a native plant nursery where we nurture seedlings grown from seed and cuttings harvested on site. Come visit the garden and nursery for inspiration for your own native plant installation in your yard, patio or porch!

These events will be guided by SDRPF staff, are family friendly, and no experience is required! Events take place every 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month, unless otherwise stated.

On July 22nd, 24th, and 26th, Innovate Tech Charlotte will hold a Sustainability and AI™ summer camp at UNCC from 8:30 AM to 3:45 PM. This camp aims to empower high school students with the knowledge and skills needed for future careers in AI and sustainability, fostering the next generation of innovators and leaders.

Goals of the Camp:

Provide hands-on experience with AI and sustainability technologies.
Inspire students to pursue careers in these fields.
Develop leadership and teamwork skills among participants.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities:

Promoters:
Spread the word about the camp through social media, community boards, and local events.
Distribute flyers and promotional materials.
Engage with potential participants and their parents to provide information and answer questions.

Organizers:
Assist with setting up and decorating the venue.
Ensure all necessary materials and equipment are ready for each session.
Coordinate with speakers and instructors to maintain the schedule.

Session Assistants:
Help instructors with hands-on activities and workshops.
Provide guidance and support to students during their projects.
Ensure all students are engaged and participating actively.

Event Managers:
Oversee the smooth running of daily activities.
Address any issues or emergencies that may arise.
Maintain communication between different volunteer groups to ensure cohesive operation.

Food and Beverage Coordinators:
Manage the distribution of breakfast and lunch.
Ensure dietary requirements are met for all participants.
Keep the dining area clean and organized.

Mentors:
Provide one-on-one support and advice to students.

Encourage and motivate students throughout the camp.

Project Description: Greenest City, the environmental project of West Neighbourhood House, focuses on urban agriculture to enhance social and environmental sustainability in Parkdale, Toronto. Greenest City manages three community gardens, including a garden for Indigenous peoples, a multicultural heritage garden with an ESL gardening club, and a general community garden.

For BMO Days of Impact, we propose a project centered on pollinator gardens and educational signage. During this 6-hour event, volunteers will plant pollinators in our newest garden beds, recently decorated by community children. Following the planting, we will label each plant in all our pollinator gardens, providing names in English, Tibetan, Anishinaabeg, and scientific terms. This initiative aims to boost biodiversity and educate our community in multiple languages.

An orientation session at 10:00 am to introduce volunteers to West Neighbourhood House, the project and safety guidelines.

Waivers: Volunteers will be required to sign a waiver upon arrival.

Attire Instructions:

• Recommended not white/clear colours nor Black
• Be mindful of Summer temperatures and humidity

Opportunity Details

Spend a morning washing pots to promote sustainability by helping the Chicago Botanic Garden conserve and re-use pots for plant production! This rain-or-shine volunteer opportunity also offers a unique chance to see behind the scenes at the Garden, as the Plant Production area is not typically open to the public.

You will be working in a sheltered area around large stock tanks filled with water and pots to be cleaned. All materials required to wash pots will be supplied--including aprons, shoe covers, rubber gloves, brushes, and scrubbing mitts. Volunteers should have the ability to stand for the entire 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. shift, as well as the ability to do repetitive motions with the arms and hands.


Please note the following important details:

The tram will leave promptly at 9 a.m. to take us to our covered outdoor position in the Plant Production area.

Please wear clothing and closed-toe shoes that can get dirty and wet, as this will be a hands-on experience. Aprons and gloves will be provided.

Pots will be washed in water, so you won't be exposed to any chemicals.
