If you have access to a 3D printer and want to help young students in south King County learn about the animals they will encounter as they explore the beach, this is a perfect project for you!The Environmental Science Center's Beach Heroes program partners with local schools to help Kindergarten-2nd graders learn about the organisms that live on the beach and how to protect them. The ESC provides free or reduced-cost transportation to local beaches for these students, in addition to a classroom visit from an ESC naturalist. Prior to their field trip, students create their own field guides by doing crayon rubbings of the templates that you will reproduce!
The ESC relies on volunteers to make these templates, and the matching funds donated by your employer will support the creation and delivery of environmental science education programs for residents throughout south King County, including students in the Highline, Renton, Tukwila, Auburn, and Kent school districts. During the COVID crisis, ESC has opted not to charge any school groups for participating in our virtual live-streamed field trips; your matching funds will help the ESC continue to operate without that source of income.

This project aims to monitor the presence and movement of flora and fauna in the Blue Mountains and provide long-term records of changes that may reflect influences such as climate change and urban development. Our volunteer citizen scientists service camera trap installations to capture movements of fauna in real-time as well as take manual photographs in fixed locations to capture long-term changes to flora and ecosystems.
Taking and collecting these images involves short, pleasant walks into the bush (the urban-bushland interface) along easy walking tracks, involving volunteer groups of 2-6 people.
These images are collected each month and uploaded to the BMWHI database. All images are then codified and analysed by our research team, then uploaded to the Atlas of Living Australia database using the BioCollect tool designed for citizen science projects.
