In order to make this happen on a wide-scale we need your help in going to event locations, picking up the excess food, and bringing it to a designated social institution and picking up a donation receipt. For instance this could be bring 40 boxes of extra pizza from a company launch to The Bowery Mission (real case). These are short volunteer activities which take around an hour maximum. What: A BioBlitz to identify as many species as possible (plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, insects, etc.) over a 24-hour period. Join an expert-led team of “citizen scientists” to help search the site.Where: The Wetlands Initiative’s 3,000-acre Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge at Hennepin & Hopper Lakes, located in north-central Illinois just south of the town of Hennepin. A large-scale restoration project begun in 2001, the Dixon Refuge is an Audubon Important Bird Area and one of only 36 designated Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance in the United States. It also contains an extremely rare seep wetland habitat, which is a designated Illinois Nature Preserve.
When: Saturday, June 13–Sunday, June 14, 2015, from 12 noon to 12 noon. Join us for as much of the event as you would like or are able!
Why: The Dixon Refuge’s high-quality mosaic of lakes, prairies, wetlands, and savannas is unique in the region, and it is home to an astounding diversity of plants and wildlife, including many state-listed bird species, rare wildflowers, and more. While some of these organism groups have been fairly well-catalogued over the years, many others have not. New species for the site, rarities, and even state records could turn up with many pairs of eyes looking! (A species of dragonfly never before seen in Illinois was found here in 2011—who knows what you might find?)
Pre-Registration is Required: The BioBlitz is appropriate for people in high school and older. High school-age participants must be accompanied by a parent. No matter your level of knowledge, there are important ways you can be part of the BioBlitz.
Register and choose your activities at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/DWRbioblitz
Questions? Please contact Laura Beshilas, TWI’s BioBlitz coordinator, at intern@wetlands-initiative.org or at (312) 922-0777, extension 113.
