This is an annual benefit event that reaches women in Brevard, Indian River and surrounding counties of Florida. Our goal with this event is to encourage and empower women to live life to the fullest by breaking free from addictions and other negative emotions and actions.

Volunteers for this event should be those who love to serve and are compassionate for others. Volunteer opportunities are greeters, ushers, parking lot attendants, assistance with valet parking, set up and serving continental breakfast and lunch and clean up at the event at the end. The most important part of this day is being able to give women a day of pampering where they feel loved and special because many are lonely, depressed, overworked and never take time for themselves. When a volunteer says hello with a smile, serves a meal or has a kind word it may be worth more than anything in the world to that woman that day.

This is a fundraiser for United Way of Southwest Louisiana in Lake Charles, La. Funds are used in human services programs in a five parish area. Southwest Louisiana includes the parishes of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jefferson Davis. 50% of the population live below the threshold where basic necessities are a daily struggle. Our helpline's top three calls are for utilities, shelter and food.

Before the direct hits from Hurricane Laura on August 27 and Hurricane Delta on October 9 devastated the community, United Way of Southwest Louisiana's pandemic response had served over 245,000 community members. Denise Durel, president and CEO, and her experienced team's quick response had allowed families to stay in their homes and keep food on their tables. Still, they all now shared in a new threat.

Fifty percent of Southwest Louisiana lives in a tenuous month-to-month financial situation that makes preparation for hurricane season and even evacuation difficult or impossible. Denise Durel and her team were busy filling buses with evacuees, answering calls and posting the latest news on social media. By August 28th, they had the first relief supply center running. They were distributing donated diesel to fuel vehicles and generators. Their photography was the first many evacuees were seeing online.

The Hurricane Relief Center, run by Durel's team under a tent in a church parking lot, served 378,114 hurricane victims before closing in November. United Way of Southwest Louisiana served Thanksgiving and Christmas meals by the thousands and gave out over 7,250 toys to children during the holiday season.

The new year brought hope, even without a federal supplemental disaster aid package for Southwest Louisiana. Denise Durel and her team supplied over 180 tons of brand new furniture donated by a major online retailer to working families sleeping on air mattresses. February brought winter storm Uri, and recent storms have exacerbated that damage until some residents are on the third round of gutting their home. Southwest Louisiana has now endured five federally declared natural disasters in ten months.
United Way of Southwest Louisiana is leading the charge to rebuild and recover with multiple avenues of attack. Community members needing assistance use the 211 information and referral line to request help with anything from debris removal, childcare or utility bills.

United Way of Southwest Louisiana, with Denise Durel at the helm, coordinates incoming volunteer groups, giving them access to case-worked residents needing aid. This professional division of efforts ensures communication between all agencies. The most significant need is gutting of sheetrock, removing flooring, debris from yards and hauling of large trees.

The other focus of Durel's team is assisting homeowners with FEMA Appeals. United Way volunteers help respond to an assortment of requests from the federal agency, easing many homeowners' anxiety, some without access to fax or email. Homeowners call 211 to request an appointment.

Mental health for local community members after all of the trauma is something United Way of Southwest Louisiana is pushing to the forefront of every discussion. The storms added a layer to the pandemic, and anxiety or depression has become common. United Way has many ways to offer free help between online Crisis Chat, Teen Texting, 211 call transfers or a funded partner agency.

As hurricane season kicks off this week, Denise Durel's United Way of Southwest Louisiana prepares once again by prepping the building damaged by hurricanes, winter storms and recent flooding. All equipment is secured and air mattresses have been ordered. The fear is not for themselves but the unrepaired homes local families are living in. Many families fear they have been forgotten.

Any individual, group, nonprofit or business with time, materials or a financial gift to offer can contact United Way of Southwest Louisiana. There is no gift too small. The collective impact from all of us will drive the rebuilding process and give hope to those struggling.

18 Reasons shares our culinary skills and creativity with low-income communities
through Cooking Matters, a program offering free, 6-week-long series
of cooking and nutrition classes throughout the Bay Area. Each Cooking Matters class is taught by a Cooking Educator, Nutrition Educator, and Class Assistant working together in a team led by an 18 Reasons staff member. You don’t have to be a professional chef or nutritionist to volunteer with us – if you are passionate about healthy food and eager to share your skills and knowledge, we welcome you as a volunteer. This program is evidence-based and proven to help participants eat healthier, gain cooking skills and confidence, and spend more time cooking together with their families. It also reduces food insecurity among low-income families by 12% in just 6 weeks. Join us in changing people's lives through healthy, delicious cooking!

CLASS VOLUNTEER POSITION DESCRIPTIONS:

Cooking Educator

You are a cooking enthusiast! During class, you will lead highly participatory cooking lessons featuring simple, healthy recipes. You will demonstrate and practice basic cooking techniques and terminology, proper knife handling, and food safety and sanitation measures. You will work with the 18 Reasons staff coordinator and class participants to select recipes for class each week. The coordinator brings the food and cooking equipment.

Nutrition Educator

You do not have to be a professional nutritionist or dietitian to succeed in this role; you just need a love of healthy eating and an eagerness to help others. Some of our nutritionist volunteers do have a background in nutrition, food science, dietetics, or a related field, but it is not required. Class topics include using MyPlate as a tool for healthy eating, planning balanced meals, eating healthier fats, food budgeting, serving sizes, reading nutrition labels, and physical activity. The classes are intended to be interactive, and the nutrition educator facilitates open-minded conversation in class including using activities and visual aids that are provided by 18 Reasons.

Class Assistant

Class assistants primarily help instructors and facilitators with classroom set-up, food preparation, activities and clean up. Other duties may include packing groceries for participants to take home, unloading and loading kitchen equipment, and washing dishes. Many people volunteer as a class assistant for their first series.

Each week, the classes require a time commitment of two hours plus 30 minutes of prep time and up to 30 minutes of clean-up each week.
In addition, communication with the Cooking Matters coordinator regarding class scheduling and the curriculum is expected.

We need volunteers to assist with overseeing donated food items and making sure all guests are able to select food and drink in a buffet type setting, during the fundraising event. Volunteers will be under a tent, or if it rains, the event will be in the Glenoak High School auxiliary gym.
