Community Kitchens is a free meal program for Oakland’s most vulnerable community members. Our mission is to feed people left behind by other food programs and to build community and solidarity through food. We work with community groups and restaurants to provide meals for unhoused community, seniors and youth. We have started a CK Home Chef Volunteer Program where community members can participate in feeding our Oakland neighbors as well.

CK Home Chef volunteers cook meals at home and donate them to existing, public Town Fridges where anyone can take a meal for free. Town Fridges are heavily relied upon by the unhoused community and ensuring that Fridges are regularly stocked with nutritious meals makes a considerable contribution to our communities.

Volunteers cook 15-25 meals per week at home, procure ingredients and deliver to one Town Fridge 1-2 days per month.

Community Kitchens provides volunteers with an orientation, meal containers and printable labels, recipes from Oakland’s treasured restaurants and chefs and a tax deductible in-kind donation receipt valued at $11/meal.

Family Action is a national charity committed to building stronger families and brighter lives. We work with more than 60,000 families to help them overcome the challenges they face through a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. You can find out more by visiting www.family-action.org.uk/what-we-do/children-families/food-club/

Volunteer Role Description
Family Action's FOOD (Food On Our Doorstep) Clubs are an innovative way of addressing food insecurity that enable low-income families to access good quality food at an exceptionally low cost.
As a FOOD Club Volunteer you will be part of the friendly team providing local families with an affordable way to access food whilst also saving food from landfill. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a drink.
What’s involved?
 Receiving deliveries and ensuring the safe storage of food.
 Packing food boxes and distributing food to member families who visit the venue.

This role would suit people who:
 Are friendly, non-judgmental and empathetic
 Have an understanding of working with vulnerable families
 Have an interest in or experience with working to tackle food insecurity or poverty
 Are able to work in a confidential environment
 Are a team player
 This role is not suited for someone unable to lift heavy crates

Working in partnership with FareShare, families can purchase a bag of tasty food (a mixture of fresh meat, fresh vegetables, dairy, bakery and store-cupboard essentials) every week worth up to £15 for just £3.50.
Today, we support 3,000 low-income families through 60 FOOD Clubs around the UK. Each family receives food worth £10-£15 per week (in excess of £780 per year) saving each household at least £600 per year through the FOOD Club scheme. These savings enable families to avoid skipping meals, provide healthy meals for their families and put their savings towards other essentials they may be struggling to afford.

The Atlanta Kosher BBQ Festival is run by the Hebrew Order of David International. We are a charitable Jewish men’s organization dedicated to brotherhood, community service and raising funds for charitable organizations.
The Atlanta Jewish community has embraced southern BBQ and put our own spin on it. Our Festival includes approximately 20 BBQ teams competing in the categories of Beef Brisket, Beef Ribs, Chicken and Chili. Our teams double blind entries are judged by KCBS Certified judges and must meet their criteria for each entry.
To keep it strictly Kosher we employ Rabbi’s from the Atlanta Kashrut Commission to ensure all of our meat, spices and equipment are up to their standards of Kashruth. We provide each team with two Weber Kettles, charcoal, spices, all of the meat and all cooking utensils. The teams pay their entry fee, bring their recipes and skills and start cooking. This is as close to a level playing field as you can get. It’s not Iron Chef or Chopped but the excitement and competition is as intense.
The Festival draws about 3500 members of the greater Atlanta community every year and you do not have to be Jewish to love Kosher BBQ or even to field a team. We showcase local Kosher Caterers, community organizations, First Responders and artisans.

Our primary motto is “Bringing the Community Together”. Our secondary motto is “We do not care what flavor you are, as long as you share our love of BBQ”.
