The Athens Y services multiple counties, but our largest service area is Athens-Clarke County. The Clarke County poverty rate is at nearly 27%, more than 10% higher than the national average. Risks of living in an impoverished household include food insecurity, falling behind in school, and a higher risk for drug and alcohol use. The Athens YMCA is able to intervene in these areas during the crucial school-age years. During summer break the Y provides a safe space for children ages five to thirteen. The children are in our care 50 hours a week, 50 hours that may otherwise be spent unsupervised, leading to a wide variety of problems.

As health declines in America, children are by no means immune. Risks of obesity seem to be never ending, including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. In addition to the overwhelming physical risk, overweight children are at an increased risk of depression, low self-esteem and other psychological problems. Nearly one in six children in the United States are considered obese. When counting the number of children who are overweight in addition to obese, the number rises to one in three. One of the largest risk factors of childhood obesity is poverty. As a county fighting an already elevated poverty rate, we directly see the correlation between low income and poor health. The Athens Y summer day camp program increases activity and educates children about nutrition daily.

Food insecurity is a direct byproduct of poverty and impacts education. Hunger causes a lack of attention span, inability to focus, and behavior issues; in turn affecting the ability to learn. This increases the achievement gap between children from different socio-economic households. The Y is supporting the school system and these children by providing two snacks a day to each camper and participating in a summer feeding program.

Preparing and serving lunch and snacks is time consuming, but extremely important for the success of each child. We need your help serving morning snack and setting up the summer feeding program.

Opportunity Details

Free unrestricted access to fresh fruit, veggies and assorted pantry items. Donations benefit Caring Hearts Food Ministry. Open to the Public - No restrictions or qualifications. We need a large volunteer contingent to allow for less workload and less wait for the public. Summer Mobile pantry serves between 400 - 600 households every third Friday monthly.
