The Day of Remembrance in the African-American community commemorates ancestors that lived through enslavement, social oppression, and political disenfranchisement since 1619. While Juneteenth and Emancipation day marks the end of enslavement, Day of Remembrance covers the breadth of the suffering of people of African descendant since colonial Virginia. It venerates the people who suffered, those who survived, and those who did not. It commemorates the heroes of Black history in the United States and the Caribbean. The day of remembrance recognizes the vibrant culture created by the descendants of those early Americans. That culture includes the Creole language of Gullah and the pidgin language of Geechee. This culture brought about the uniquely American cuisine known as "Soul Food" today. It also includes the music, arts, writing, inventions, and economic successes stemming from the abiding faith and strength of will found in the African American community.

The evening includes music, dance, the spoken word, spiritual message, and history presentation. It recognizes culturally significant rituals such as libation and the calling of the ancestors by name.

Refreshments served.

*Volunteers will be needed to assist with planning three months prior to the event and the day of the event.

Community Made cooking is to ease food access needs for participants and local food banks. Volunteers and participants cook 200 food portions together for the wider community that also includes the participants to take home for the week. The rest of the meals will be delivered to local community food banks, families needing more food access and support, and members who are not physically mobile.

The format is not like a teaching class where the head chef teaches a class. You will still learn, 'on the fly' when the chef assigns a responsibility. The whole kitchen team will be supportive to learn and develop together, while not in a teaching class mode. You will learn new skills to cook for more people.
Depending on timings , there will be a brief break for lunch and rest together, at the discretion of the head chef.

Key Tasks
• Help teacher to setup the kitchen for community cooking participants.
• Assist with washing and chopping vegetables and preparing meals with participants.
• Assist with washing up and cleaning kitchen.
