The ARF Charitable Foundation's WIDE Program (Workforce Initiative for Diversity and Excellence) identifies diverse and underrepresented college juniors studying marketing for participation in a two year career preparation program. One big element of the program is mentorship. Each fall when we select a new cohort of college juniors, we pair them with someone working in the marketing, advertising, media, research, data and analytics fields to act as a mentor. These relationships require a minimum of one hour/month for two years, until graduation (total of 24 hours over two years). The impact of these relationships has been immeasurable, providing real-world advice, suggestions, experiences, support and a feeling of belonging and confidence they can succeed in this industry.
The WIDE team provides any needed support, but allows the mentor and mentee the freedom to schedule their time together - in person or live - and determine the nature of their conversations and overall relationships.
