Since the peak of the pandemic in New York City in the spring of 2020, most gatherings of the LGBTQ+ community to engage in athletics, sports and recreation together were cancelled. In the late summer and early fall, the State and City governments' allowed for reopening of gyms and indoor pools in New York City, as well as small gatherings for outdoor organized group athletics, sports and recreation in public spaces. Out of Bounds NYC, Inc. (d/b/a "The NYC LGBT Sports Network", hereinafter referred to as the "Network") is supporting the the local LGBTQ+ community with reopening. The Network faces significant hurdles including: (1) a lack of resources to restart regular operations, or even reduced operations on a limited scale, (2) a lack of resources to create new policies and procedures to reduce the risk of spread COVID-19, including, but not limited to, technological innovations for registration, contact tracing, health surveys, social distancing, and contactless transactions between athletes and program administration/management. This project seeks volunteers with technical assistance as well as resources to assist with covering the cost of IT solutions, operations and staffing to assist with reopening.

Specific needs identified at this time include:

(1) Virtual Programming and IT Solutions to replace In-Person Events: Immediately prior to lockdown in March 2020, the Network was working with various LGBTQ+ community organizations and businesses (such as Boxers, Cheer New York, Front Runners New York, Team New York Aquatics & OutCycling) to produce social events to build community (see www.oobnyc.org/events). The Network has very limited resources in terms of manpower and capital, and, thus, has not been able to make investments in the procurement of IT solutions to produce virtual programming since lockdown, nor take advantage of free IT solutions such as Google for Non-Profits because of the lack of manpower. The Network is looking for volunteers to assist with these efforts as well as resources to assist with funding these efforts.

(2) Improve Communications: Immediately prior to lockdown in March 2020, the Network primarily used its website, e-mail and Facebook to communicate and engage with the community (details at www.oobnyc.org). The Network has very limited resources in terms of manpower and capital, and, thus, has not been able to make investments in the procurement of IT solutions to improve communications since lockdown, nor take advantage of free IT solutions to improve communications such as Google for Non-Profits because of the lack of manpower. The Network is looking for volunteers to assist with these efforts as well as resources to assist with funding these efforts.

(3) Brooklyn Community Pride Center Health, Wellness & Fitness Programming and Brooklyn (Bedford Union) Armory Recreation Center: Last year, the Network started working with the Brooklyn Community Pride Center (www.lgbtbrooklyn.org) to expand their health, wellness & fitness programming (primarily yoga, boxing and other small group fitness programming in indoor settings) and draft proposals to provide dramatically expanded programming in the Brooklyn-Bedford Union Armory Recreation Center (www.bedfordarmory.com), which was slated to open last month (November 2020). The opening of the Armory Recreation Center has been postponed, but the Network is continuing to work with the Brooklyn Community Pride Center to draft proposals for new health, wellness and fitness programming. The Network has very limited resources in terms of manpower and capital, and, thus, has not been able to focus resources on these effort. The Network is looking for volunteers to assist with these efforts as well as resources to assist with funding these efforts.

(4) Advocacy for Fair and Equitable Access to Outdoor Public Spaces in New York City: Last year, the Network started working with Get Out And Trek (GOAT) (www.beagoat.org), their private sector partners, and other stakeholders and interest groups, including the State and City governments, to advocate for fair and equitable access to outdoor public spaces in New York City. This year, with the pandemic, this advocacy work is even more important. The Network has very limited resources in terms of manpower and capital, and, thus, has not been able to focus resources on these effort. The Network is looking for volunteers to assist with these efforts as well as resources to assist with funding these efforts.

(5) Team New York Aquatics Reopening: Team New York Aquatics (TNYA) (www.tnya.org) is a masters aquatics organization for swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming. TNYA implemented a mandatory registration policies and procedures for practices for the first time when they reopened on October 3 (www.tnya.org/reopening). At this time, registration is primarily administered manually. TNYA is looking for solutions to digitize the registration process. In addition, TNYA is working with the pool hosting practices, Convent of the Sacred Heart School, to require health surveys to be filled out electronically immediately prior to practices. At this time, the registration system and the health survey system are completely separate and independent. TNYA is looking for solutions to possibly integrate all of the critical requirements for operating during the pandemic into integrated IT solutions.

More needs will be added to this list when the details are finalized.

We need a social media manager that can develop content and monitor all of our social media platforms. We also desperately need help increase our followers. This person should be able to create professional social media cards, identify and connect with potential sponsors and partners via social media. Engage with other posts who share our vision. We would like this person to review our current platforms and make sure they are consistent, speak to our vision, and professional.

Managing social media is not our expertise (nor do we find it appealing) but it is so necessary. We would love your help. We have been posting routinely for a few months but we are still not getting the engagement or increase in followers. We would love for you to develop a playbook for social media content, ads, videos. Then act on our behalf on each of these SM sites for the next 6 - 9 weeks. (Or until our presence increases.)

This project is extremely important as we head into our 2021 - 2022 fundraising. We have some very lofty goals which will require the support of our community.

As part of the community project component of our program, a group of students from Chester Hill High School in term 1 & 2 of 2020 chose to focus on mental health, self-care and positivity. Their aim was to de-stigmatise mental health and encourage more conversations about mental health, as well as provide inspiration and positivity to their community.

To bring greater awareness to these topics, the group created over 60 hand-drawn posters with different positive quotes and affirmations which were placed around their school and local community centres. This project was coordinated and executed by the group extremely well and the girls were hugely impacted by their overall Helmsman Project experience.

The results were recognised by the local newspaper who wrote a story about the project, and many of our online supporters were also impressed by the project.

We’ve received scanned copies of all the designs and wish to further the reach of the project beyond the local Chester Hill community by turning them into cards. With the many challenges presented to the world during 2020, we think these positive quotes and affirmations would be well received. We want to use this successful project to raise further awareness of The Helmsman Project, whilst bringing messages of hope. We also see this as a potential avenue for raising some money through the sale of cards and a QR-code on each card leading to a webpage with a story on Chester Hill and The Helmsman Project, as well as an invitation to donate.

To achieve this goal, we are looking for help from people with experience in marketing, social media and graphic design. Tasks we are looking for assistance with include:
 Creating a marketing/promotional plan, including social media, email,
direct corporate approach, etc
 Creating card designs using the quotes and affirmations created by the
group; also include our logo, a short blurb and a QR code
 Copywriting for the card and webpage
 Sourcing printing options and creating a pricing plan/deals for the cards
