This free celebration, attracting at least 250 visitors, features different aspects of wildlife each year. Previous themes include crepuscular and nocturnal forest creatures, and currently threatened species or those which have overcome endangered status. Families are first are greeted by volunteer musicians in our Outdoor Classroom, where local libraries facilitate seasonal crafts and activities. The large group is then divided into smaller ones for visiting the “animals,” who are stationed along our many trails. Volunteers lead groups to each station, where an “animal” provides an interactive dialogue about forest life. (“Animals” are costumed volunteers wearing detailed, hand-crafted disguises, complete with faux fur, feathers, and props for an accurate representation of each critter.) After twelve minutes, an air-horn blasts signals for the group to rotate. After every group has cycled through each station, everyone returns to the Outdoor Classroom for donuts and cider. In contrast to other autumn activities, “Animals of Halloween” is not spooky; the family-friendly program is designed to educate and entertain visitors of all ages.Available Shifts

OGPC is a non-profit STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Design, Mathematics) advocacy organization that runs an annual competition for 6-12 graders and runs solely on donations. Key to that is locating sponsors and maintaining relationships with them. Our organization runs on around $10,000/year with 100% going to our program although we are looking to grow. All positions are volunteer. Our goal is to attract a mix of national companies (for example, Amazon, Google, Electronic Arts) along with state companies and organizations. The Sponsorship Coordinator would have the following responsibilities:- Contact past sponsors to maintain relationships
- Find new sponsors (identify, contact, discuss)
- Apply for grants
- Ensure sponsors invited to event, highlighted properly, thanked
The work would be unscheduled, something to fit in as you have time. Our season runs from November until May and we like to have our sponsors lined up by the start of the season as much as possible, though it's not unusual for us to add sponsors into February or March as necessary.
If this is something you are interested in, we'd love to hear from you!

What began as a simple soup line in 1969 has become a village-wide festival that draws 50,000+ locals and tourists. Burgoo is a pioneer stew cooked over fire in six gigantic kettles beside the historic I&M canal. Community volunteers stay up all night to watch over the stew, which must be stirred continuously - it's something of a ritual to ring in the big day! This year is special because we get to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this event, which is not only one of the largest and longest-running festivals in the state of Illinois, Burgoo is a festival that successfully funds the LaSalle County Historical Society's museums and programs each and every year!Available Shifts
