Mission Statement
Our mission is to meet the needs of patients diagnosed with breast cancer by addressing all aspects of treatment, as well as supporting each patient and their family through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
About This Cause
The Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA (BCRC-WA) is a Western Australian clinical research, treatment and support centre for women and men with breast cancer. Our focus on providing evidence-based treatment for breast cancer is aimed at increasing survival rates and prolonging life. As a clinician-founded and driven organisation, we have created a centre of excellence that brings together the expertise of Medical Oncologists, Surgeons, Radiation Oncologists, Breast Physicians, Breast Nurses, Clinical Psychology, Genetic Counselling and other healthcare professionals for the care of women and men with breast cancer. Established in 2009 under the stewardship of Professor Arlene Chan AM and Dr Peter Willsher, we are a charitable organisation undertaking high-quality research and the development of patient-centred support programs. BCRC-WA is led by a Board of Directors, with Carmelo Arto, Chief Executive Officer, being ably supported by the leadership team and staff. Professor Chan was named the 2016 Western Australian of the Year in the Professions category for her pioneering work in breast cancer. She was awarded an Order of Australia for her services to breast cancer research in 2018, for her work over the past 20 years to improve the lives of more than 4,500 breast cancer patients and their families. Many of the clinical trials Professor Chan oversees at BCRC-WA have been part of the international collaboration of trials which have ultimately led to new drug discoveries in the treatment of breast cancer, resulting in increased cure rates and significantly prolonging life for many patients. As a result, BCRC-WA is known globally as a significant contributor in breast cancer research. BCRC-WA is a not-for-profit, registered charitable organisation (Licence CC 21750) where donations are directed to research, support and education programs and provision of services benefiting our patients and their families. We are extremely proud of the fact that funds received provide important resources and support. Located at Hollywood Consulting Centre, Hollywood Private Hospital, we are proudly a Western Australian organisation. Research and Treatment As our name suggests, Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA conducts research into breast cancer treatment and support. Our research informs and underpins the treatment we provide to our patients. BCRC-WA is unique in the breast cancer space. We provide patients with the benefit of access to international drug treatment trials and participation in patient-focused research aimed to minimise treatment side effects and better understand the biology of breast cancer. In addition, our specialists and allied health staff provide evidence-based care to patients. All our efforts work together, with the goal of achieving the best possible outcomes for patients. Our research is conducted by the Oncology and Surgical Specialists and carried out through the hard work and commitment of our Breast Clinical Trials Unit. Our Breast Clinical Trials Unit, which is arguably the busiest breast cancer unit in Australia given the number of staff and number of patients seen, runs 20 to 30 clinical trials at any one time. A facility with a treatment base and trials unit of this size is unique in Australia. At least 17 of the international trials that we have been a major contributor to, have led to enhanced breast cancer treatment world-wide Clinical trials are the only way to discover which new approaches to cancer treatments will work better than existing ones. Patients who are eligible to enter our trials, do so in the knowledge that aspects of the trial-directed treatment is provided to them free of charge. We aim to find new and better treatments and make them available to patients through our clinical trials, furthering the global knowledge of breast cancer and its treatment. Breast Cancer Research Centre-WA incorporating Perth Breast Cancer Institute (PBCI) This new centre aims to meet the needs of patients diagnosed with breast cancer by addressing all aspects of treatments, as well as supporting each patient and their family through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. There is access to clinical trials for both early and metastatic breast cancer and a broad range of support services, including clinical psychology and genetic counselling. The approach will be to connect each patient with a care coordinator, who will help manage their treatment journey, linking each patient with the necessary support services, whilst also providing support to husbands, partners and children. This will allow the patient to concentrate on the treatment and recovery process, ensuring they receive the best evidence-based management possible. PBCI encompasses research, treatment and support services all under the one roof. The location of all these services in one building greatly benefit patients and their loved ones by reducing travel times and the associated stress that can be caused by having to manage multiple appointments. The different treatments needed for individual patients will be personalised and patients will be guided through the phases of their care. The PBCI is the realisation of many years’ work and will help us continue to reshape the future of breast cancer. It is a Western Australian first and has the backing of Ramsay Health Care and Hollywood Private Hospital, offering world class treatment, care and support to breast cancer patients and their families.
