Mission Statement
The Foundation’s Mission is to support the Mater in delivering the highest standard of holistic healthcare to all patients . Grants from the Foundation are used to buy new equipment, contribute to the expansion of facilities, fund academic teaching appointments and meet the costs of the many ground-breaking research projects undertaken on the campus.
About This Cause
The Friends of the Mater Foundation is a charitable trust supporting excellence in healthcare at the Mater Hospital Sydney. In 1997, a successful capital appeal to raise funds to expand the Mater’s Cardiac Services motivated the fundraising committee to form an ongoing body to provide financial support to the Mater. It marked the beginning of the Friends of the Mater Foundation. Since its inception in 1999, the Foundation has been the principal fundraising arm the Mater Hospital. Major sources of income are donations and bequests. All gifts are fully tax deductible. The Foundation has facilitated gifts in excess of $75 million. This is in a large part due to an extraordinary donation in 2006 of $40 million made by Mr Greg Poche AO, for the establishment of The Poche Centre, home to Melanoma Institute Australia. To achieve our mission of supporting priority needs at the Mater, each year, grant applications are sought from medical clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals across the campus. Grants are allocated to the areas where support from the Foundation will have maximum impact on the delivery of quality patient care. The Foundation has supported a number of major projects at the Mater, including The Patricia Ritchie Centre for Cancer Care & Research, The Kay Van Norton Centre For Well-being, the Pagent Family Obstetric Theatre and the Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery. The Foundation is currently supporting the build of the Ritchie Family Centre for Palliative/Supportive Care and the Duncan Family Day Surgery Centre. This new wing housing these facilities will be completed in March 2025. Our next fundraising project is to support a refurbishment of the Mater's maternity ward to ensure that it meets the needs of modern families.
