Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) pioneers advances in melanoma research and treatment that are making a difference to the lives of patients today. We are a non-profit organisation dedicated to preventing and curing melanoma through innovative, world-class research, treatment and education programs. With one of highest incidence of melanoma in the world, melanoma is known as Australia's National Cancer. Some melanoma facts: -Melanoma kills more young (20-39yr) Australians than any other single cancer -30 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma every day -1 person dies from melanoma every 6 hours in Australia - Approx. 13,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma in Australia this year -Melanoma is the 3rd most common form of cancer in Australian men and women
About This Cause
Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) pioneers advances in melanoma research and treatment that are making a difference to the lives of patients today. We are a non-profit organisation dedicated to preventing and curing melanoma through innovative, world-class research, treatment and education programs. MIA is a national affiliated network of melanoma researchers and clinicians based in Sydney at the Poche Centre – the world’s largest melanoma research and treatment facility. It’s from here that our specialists pioneer new research, conduct clinical trials, develop new treatments and promote awareness of melanoma and where our clinics treat over 7500 patients this includes 1,500 new melanoma patients each year. MIA's research strength is founded on three resources that facilitate an array of research projects: -Melanoma Research Database -BioSPecimen Bank -Clinical Trials MIA has 215 new patients recruited to clinical trials and ongoing managment of 700 existing patients. Researchers at MIA collaborate with their counterparts at the best national and international institutions where there is a focus on melanoma. Improved survival rates for advanced melanoma Patients. In 2010 Stage IV metastatic melanoma had 25% one year survival rate. Now in 2017 we have 75% one year survival rate. Funding research is the key to increasing the survival rate for melanoma to 100%.
