Mission Statement
The Heart Research Institute is an internationally recognised medical research institute with a mission to prevent death and suffering from cardiovascular disease. We address areas of unmet need in cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease, hypertension, heart failure, preeclampsia, congenital heart disease and pulmonary vascular disease, as well as metabolic complications such as diabetes.
About This Cause
The Heart Research Institute is an internationally recognised medical research institute that performs groundbreaking cardiovascular research. Our vision is a future where no-one needlessly dies of cardiovascular disease. The major short-term focus of our research is to understand the development and progression of atherothrombotic conditions in which the arteries are narrowed and restricted due to a build-up of fatty deposits. This is being achieved via scientific and clinical research work conducted by the scientific groups that make up the HRI, from basic biomedical discovery work, drug discovery and development, devices and device improvement, to clinical trials and clinical initiatives. There are four long-term objectives for our research: • To investigate mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. • To develop new ways to detect symptoms of cardiovascular disease before it leads to clinical problems. • To develop new treatments that can reverse the development of heart disease. • To prevent individuals developing cardiovascular disease in the future. Our groundbreaking research is conducted in world-class facilities, with our headquarters in Newtown, Sydney and research laboratories at the Charles Perkins Centre, The University of Sydney. HRI collaborates with institutes throughout Australia and globally – with over 150 collaborations across 21 countries – and is partnered with the Charles Perkins Centre, the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney Local Health District and Sydney Health Partners.
