Mission statement To provide a safe, secure and learning environment for young people with opportunities for success in every aspect of their lives. Vision Statement Torres Strait Kaziw Meta enables children from the outer Islands of the Torres Strait to be educated on-country, by providing safe, family focused and culturally supported residential accommodation from years 7 to 12.
About This Cause
Who We Are: We are a non-profit organisation running a dedicated boarding hostel tailored for 67 Torres Strait Islander students to attend the local high school on Thursday Island, Queensland, Australia. Our staff predominantly comprises Torres Strait Islanders, enabling us to establish strong connections with our students and nurture their overall well-being. We approach our work with profound respect for the region's culture and environment, dedicated to preserving its heritage while advancing progress. Our program centres on empowering Torres Strait Islanders to embrace on-country learning, fostering a deep sense of cultural pride, and positioning them as architects of a sustainable and thriving future for their community. Our Programs: 1. Culturally Appropriate Wellbeing Activities: Our initiatives encompass culturally sensitive activities aimed at enhancing the holistic well-being of our students. 2. Education and Opportunity: We offer a comprehensive suite of programs, including life skills development, cultural enrichment, teacher and study support, and a Transition Officer to facilitate connections with local business opportunities, jobs, and workplace experiences. 3. Recreational Engagement: We actively encourage and facilitate our boarders to participate in a diverse range of sporting activities, from basketball, boxing, swimming, and volleyball to NRL, promoting physical health and teamwork. 4. Leadership Development: Through our leadership program, we strive to cultivate confident Torres Strait leaders who can positively impact their community. 5.
