Mission Statement
SolarBuddy is an Australian charity with the vision to create a brighter future for all children. Creating a bright future for all children is as hard as it sounds. One of the biggest obstacles we face is energy poverty. It is a complex challenge – for the communities experiencing it, and for those who cannot imagine it to truly understand. Energy poverty plunges 1.4 billion people into complete darkness, every night as they lack equal access to clean energy. They depend on primitive forms of energy like charcoal and firewood to ignite their way through the night. These forms of energy have a devastating impact on their health, well-being, economic stability, educational outcomes and the environment. But we are motivated by big challenges, and the impact we can make by focussing on our 3 core principles. Education is core to the solution. It helps to build local awareness and understanding of energy poverty, creates better global citizens, and is the most important factor in creating equitable opportunities for a child. Sustainable innovation shapes our solutions. We design with people as our focus, ensuring that everything we create is simple, socially impactful, environmentally sustainable and makes a difference for a decade not a day. Connected communities are joined at the heart and united by need. When we share ownership of the problem, we lighten the load. The more hearts who join us, through donations, support and advocacy, the more positive outcomes we can create. We will never stop creating new ways to fight this challenge. We see a brighter future for all children, and by learning, creating, and working together we light the way there. Our goals: Our Goal #1: To gift millions of solar lights to children living in extreme energy poverty. Our Goal #2: To educate and inspire 6 million people globally to be agents of change to end energy poverty by 2030. By achieving these two goals, this is the impact we are having: **Up to 30 million people’s lives are able to be uplifted out of energy poverty and have more equitable opportunities for a brighter future. **12+ million people understand the crisis of energy poverty and have the potential help and advocate for positive change.
About This Cause
SolarBuddy provides safe, reliable, effective, and innovative solar lights to children who don’t have access to electricity, empowering them to reach their full potential. Our donor, corporate and education programs give our community the chance to transform lives through the gift of light while learning how innovative design solutions can help create a more sustainable world. We have created various innovative programs combining learning with practical application – designed to build awareness and inspire action on the issue of energy poverty. All our work is aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. All funds raised go directly to purchasing SolarBuddy lights that go to communities living in energy poverty. Energy poverty is a complex challenge, impacting the health and well-being, educational outcomes, and economic stability of the communities experiencing it, as well as our environment. Participants learn about extreme energy poverty and how it devastatingly limits the lives of approximately 1 billion people and how with SolarBuddy they can become part of the solution. The solutions-focused program is aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a call to action with three overarching aims: to fight inequality and injustice, end extreme poverty, and to tackle climate change. In teams, employees will collaborate to discover, define, develop, design and deliver a unique solution to a global issue we currently face in relation to one of the 17 SDGs. Solve The 17 has been curated by an exceptionally skilled team of educators, innovators and designers to provide employees with an interactive, educational program that creates real-world solutions to the most pressing global issues that we face. STEM Education Program Our Education Program encourages student collaboration, inter-culture understanding, creative and critical thinking while inspiring students to consider how innovative design solutions can transform lives. Designed by education experts, our program is aligned to ACARA and mapped to the Sustainable Development Goals. With no access to modern, affordable electricity, our solar lights empower the children to reach their full potential and offer health and economic benefits, as well as improved educational and environmental outcomes. To date, we have gifted over 200,000 solar lights to children across the globe. We are currently working in countries such as: Kenya, Tanzania, Dominican Republic, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Cambodia, Zimbabwe and Madagascar. We also offerSolarBuddy's Illuminating Communities Initiative within Australia. This initiative empowers companies to support Australian communities by sponsoring schools and students to undertake SolarBuddy's STEM based and SDG aligned Education Program.
