About This Cause
St John is a charity that supports Victorians through emergencies, disasters and sickness. We keep communities safe and help create safer communities. We provide First Aid and First Aid training that saves lives; we act as first responders at sporting, community, and entertainment events; and we transport vulnerable members of the community between their home, hospital, and health care providers. Every year, over 370,000 Victorians utilise our services – whether it be our transport services, First Aid care, or First Aid training. This is in addition to the millions of people whose health we oversee at sporting, community, and entertainment events across the state each year. As a charity, we self-fund our life-saving community initiatives and programs through philanthropic support, some fee-for-service activities, training, and sales of First Aid kits and products. We receive no recurrent government funding. How we help: St John supports Victorian communities in times of emergency and disaster, including during bushfire, flood, major incidents, and pandemic. St John is regularly deployed to emergency management events throughout Victoria, including under the State Health Emergency Response Plan. During bushfires, we provide First Aid at relief centres; we are also called upon to provide First Aid care at major incidents (such as the housing commission fires in 2017, and during the thunderstorm asthma conditions of 2016). We are well-placed and always on standby to support an emergency response. We have thousands of trained and equipped employees and volunteers who are dedicated to helping Victorians get through crises. St John Medical Assistance Teams are deployed to high-risk activities and large-scale events and can be set up rapidly. This includes a temporary on-site field hospital, staffed with a scalable team of volunteer medical practitioners, nurses, paramedics and logistical staff. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, St John has provided vital services to support the health response to the crisis – including door-to-door COVID-19 test collection; transporting vulnerable members of the community to be COVID-19 tested or to attend medical and other urgent appointments; delivering vital PPE around the state; and we established a 30-bed field hospital.
