About This Cause
Established in 1980, SPCS has grown into a trusted and vital emergency relief service and key support for many of the most vulnerable and marginalised people on the southern section of the Mornington Peninsula. SPCS improves the lives of people experiencing disadvantage or crisis situations through a range of crisis support services as well as material aid, fresh food and pantry items, transport vouchers, assistance with medication costs and help with school costs, books and uniforms. We run a number of centre based and outreach programs from those sleeping rough or experiencing homelessness through to our Community Pantry and Fresh Food Programs which provide for over 1,600 clients annually, and often their children, with access to vital staples and fresh fruit and vegetables, and therefore nutrition. Access to these programs not only improves the wellbeing, nutrition and health of all our clients and any people they support but most importantly brings them into range of our professional staff as well as providing an opportunity for healthy social and community interaction with our diverse group of dedicated volunteers. This is vitally important as many marginalised clients do not find it easy to access support services directly or to socially interact with their community. Our services are an important engagement entry point to other services that can address the underlying issues of client disadvantage. Our main centre programs include: • Pantry Items and Food Parcels • Fruit & Vegetables • Toiletries • Pet food • Public transport costs & bikes • Assistance with pharmacy and education costs • Shower & Laundry Program (SPLaSh) • SP Homeless Connections (support for rough sleepers) • No Interest Loan Scheme (NILs) • Energy Mentor program • Financial Counselling • Bedding, tents & sleeping bags • Assistance with Utilities • Case management services for individuals (Low Income Support Service) and families (Family Support Service) • Referrals to further supports in the community The SPCS Low Income Support Service is a case management program offering support to individuals experiencing crisis and disadvantage. Our Low Income Support Worker works closely with people on the issues that matter most to them, addressing the underlying causes and building solutions. Each situation is unique so case work is tailored to their needs and the individual may access the program for as long as needed. The SPCS Family Support Service is a case management program offering support to families experiencing crisis and disadvantage. Our Family Support Worker works closely with parents on the issues that matter most to them, addressing the underlying causes and building solutions. Each family is unique so case work is tailored to their needs and the family may access the program for as long as needed. Southern Peninsula Laundry & Shower (SPLaSh) program is an outreach homelessness support program run by Southern Peninsula Community Support. Operating on the Rosebud Foreshore, SPLaSh provides an opportunity for people experiencing homelessness to have a shower, get laundry done, have a meal and access food parcels, toiletries and material aid. Importantly, SPLaSh is a connection point to workers, peers and much needed services to support health and wellbeing. SPLaSh helps some of the most marginalised people in our community link back into society, restoring their sense of dignity and value. Southern Peninsula Homeless Connections (SPHC) is the dedicated program for rough sleepers offered through Southern Peninsula Community Support. Our SPHC Assertive Outreach worker finds and connects with rough sleepers along the foreshore and other locations, and works with them to link back into services and into the community. While the goal is to eventually find stable accommodation, many other issues may be addressed, including mental and physical health, dental, income, AOD etc.
