Mission Statement

NV Access is an Australian-based charity that develops and supports NVDA, free and open-source screen reading software for Microsoft Windows, allowing blind and vision impaired people all over the world to independently use computers at home, in education, the workplace and much more.

About This Cause

We are dedicated to the ideal that access to technology should not incur an extra cost for blind and vision impaired users. We believe that blind and vision impaired people should be able to use any type of technology for the same cost as their sighted peers. To that end, our primary aim is to support projects which provide free and open source computer software solutions that enable this accessibility. NV Access was established in early 2007 as a result of the increasing support needs of the NVDA project. NV Access develops and supports free and open source software that facilitates access to technology for blind and vision impaired people. We do this by employing developers, providing technical resources such as internet hosting and development tools, and facilitating attendance at conferences and events. As we are a non-profit organisation, our work is funded primarily through grants and donations. NV Access provides its NVDA screen reading software free of charge to any blind or vision impaired person in the world who needs it, thus relieving the problems caused by social and economic barriers to technology access. Our software has been changing the lives of tens of thousands of blind and vision impaired people who can now independently use computers to produce written content, read news, socialise, shop and bank online, and, most importantly, actively participate in education and employment. All of this would otherwise have been impossible due to the high cost of existing commercial software.
