Mission Statement

Mission statement: The Association Federation for the Blind and Partially Sighted in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland (BSVWNB for short) is the central point of contact and advice for blind and visually impaired people and their families. We are the regional interest group for 55,000 blind and visually impaired people in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. Founded in 1947, we are today one of the largest self-help organizations in Austria. Our work is non-partisan and non-denominational. Whether eyesight is absent from birth or deteriorates due to illness, accident or old age, those affected face major challenges. We provide support, point out perspectives and accompany you to independence. The goal of our work is a self-determined life for blind and visually impaired people. With our professional and personal support, those affected can overcome many obstacles. Anyone who is blind or visually impaired needs a lot of information and extensive training. Two of our core competencies lie in individual advice and rehabilitation training. BSVWNB is based in the barrier-free Louis Braille House in Vienna's 14th district. We are part of the Austria-wide umbrella organization for the Blind and Visually Impaired BSVOE. BSVWNB / BAABSV GmbH supports blind and visually impaired people in their professional lives as well as with assistive technology. Our work is largely funded by donations. We are organized as an association.

From expert diagnosis by our in-house ophthalmologist and psychological care all the way to help with support in dealing with social services, legal advice and career support. Trained social workers, trainers for orientation and mobility as well as techniques for daily living are available to visit blind and partially sighted individuals and their families at their homes. They offer support and help with rehabilitation in order to help their clients gain as much autonomy as possible in their everyday lives. Counselling and training can also take place at our „Louis Braille Haus“. Training BSV WNB offers comprehensive rehabilitation training in order to increase the autonomy of our blind and visually impaired clients. They can learn the skills and techniques to move safely and independently at home and in public. They learn how to process sensory inputs, how to approach unfamiliar settings and situations, and develop coping strategies. The training we offer is split into two sections: Orientation and Mobility (O&M) and Techniques for Daily Living (LPF). All our trainers have received specialized training in their fields. Their approach follows a simple motto: “Give as little help as possible and as much as required.” Counselling and Social Work Our trained social workers offer individual counselling sessions to inform clients, their families and other interested parties about the support – financial and otherwise – that is available to them. They then assist with the administrative work to obtain what is needed. They work closely with our other qualified personnel, such as trainers, work coaches and specialists for assistive technology. We also offer positions for young men to do their 9-month civilian service. They are available to drive, run errands or otherwise assist members who need assistance. Leisure Activities We offer a wide range of leisure activities – from the chess club “Wiener Schachrunde”, a choir, and a “pensioners club” to cultural events, workshops, yoga, and even language courses. We are especially proud of our active youth group “Verrückte Jugend Aktion”. Work Coaching and Assistive Technology We offer our help to people who haven’t yet started their working lives, as well as to those who are already working and need support in order to keep their careers – or to change them according to their changed circumstances. Employers are offered extensive support to encourage them to hire blind and visually impaired people and create inclusive work environments.
