Mission Statement

Casa 1 offers shelter for lgbtqiap+ youth expelled from their homes in addition to housing a cultural center and free mental health clinic

About This Cause

Established in 2017, Casa 1 is a social project whose purpose is to offer shelter to young people between the ages of 18 and 25 who were expelled from home by their family because of their affective sexual orientations and gender identity. The shelter runs in parallel with the activities of the Cultural Center and the Social Clinic, with all services offered free of charge. The shelter focuses on promoting autonomy and organization for young people who, out of the blue, find themselves homeless. It works as a temporary foster home and the length of stay is four months. During this period, issues of clinical and mental health, education and employability are addressed. "It’s a short period of time, but with the intense and dedicated work of the team of volunteers, we are able help these young people", explains Alvina Cirilo, social worker and responsible for supporting youth. In total, 20 housing spaces are offered. At the same time, the Casa 1 cultural center is open twelve hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to specific thematic activities, it offers classes in English, Spanish, Portuguese as a second language, yoga, sewing, musical theater, martial arts, percussion, theater, among others. With universal service, open to everyone, the cultural center aims to establish a relationship with the surroundings and promote safety for everyone who lives in the shelter. Mental health is also a fundamental aspect and, therefore, in September 2018, the work of health professionals was expanded to offer assistance to the general public, in addition to continuing to work with residents. "Today, around 40 professionals assist around 150 people free of charge or at an accessible price. Casa 1 also offers psychological support sessions, nutritionist services, and complementary therapy services such as aromatherapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy", reports Iran Giusti, founder of the project. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the NGO strengthened its focus on social assistance and has already distributed tons of food, more than 5 thousand basic food baskets and 10 thousand masks. Supported through crowdfunding via the Benfeitoria platform (https://benfeitoria.com/casa1), the project relies on specific support from companies, but chose to constantly invest in donations from individuals, in order to establish a service policy with no strings attached. ABOUT CASA 1 (brief description) Casa 1 is an organization located in downtown São Paulo, which focuses its work on three fronts: the shelter for LGBTQIAP+ people expelled from home due to their affective sexual orientations and gender identities; Galpão Casa 1, a cultural center that offers cultural and educational activities; and the Casa 1 Social Clinic, which provides psychotherapeutic care, occasional medical care, and complementary therapies. In total, approximately 3,500 people are assisted every month, in various projects.
