Mission Statement

Anjos d'Ajuda is a CSO (Civil Society Organization), non-profit and non-governmental. Since 2013, we have been working to reduce animal abandonment and suffering, and to promote environmental balance through the population control (spaying and neutering) of dogs and cats in our municipality. Our mission also includes rescuing animals in vulnerable situations, providing veterinary care, supporting shelter for those in need, and facilitating responsible adoptions to ensure every animal has a chance at a safe and dignified life.

About This Cause

Anjos d’Ajuda is a non-profit, non-governmental civil society organization based in Arraial d’Ajuda, Bahia. Since 2013, we’ve worked quietly and consistently to reduce the suffering of animals in our community—especially those that have been abandoned, mistreated, or left to survive on the streets. Our work is rooted in a simple principle: animals deserve care, respect, and protection, regardless of their circumstances. In practice, this has meant building a network of volunteers, local rescuers, and independent shelters that collaborate to meet the daily and ongoing needs of dogs and cats who have no one else to rely on. At the heart of what we do is population control through spaying and neutering. Over the past decade, we’ve coordinated countless sterilization campaigns, prioritizing animals in vulnerable areas and those in the care of low-income families who want to help but lack the resources. This is a long-term effort, aimed at reducing not just the number of animals born into suffering, but also the broader public health and environmental consequences that come with unchecked overpopulation. It’s a quiet but powerful form of prevention. Alongside our sterilization work, Anjos d’Ajuda supports animal rescue efforts across the region. We often receive calls from concerned citizens about animals that have been hit by cars, poisoned, or found in critical condition. When possible, we help facilitate emergency veterinary care, transportation, and temporary shelter. We don’t operate a central shelter ourselves. Instead, we work in partnership with a network of individuals who open their homes to foster animals in need. This decentralized model allows us to act quickly and with flexibility, but it also means that we depend heavily on donations to provide food, medicine, and veterinary treatment. Veterinary care is a major part of our mission. Many of the animals we assist arrive in poor health, requiring antibiotics, surgery, or long-term treatment. We work closely with local clinics and professionals who understand our mission and often extend reduced rates, but even so, the volume of need can be overwhelming. Our goal is to ensure that every animal we support receives proper medical care—not just in emergencies, but throughout their recovery and rehabilitation. We also support the adoption process. Once animals are stabilized, healthy, and ready for a new life, we take great care to place them with responsible families. We don’t believe in rushing this step. Our team conducts home visits, provides orientation on responsible pet ownership, and follows up after adoption to make sure both the animal and the family are adjusting well. For us, adoption isn’t just the end of a rescue—it’s the beginning of a new commitment. In everything we do, we try to operate with transparency and compassion, both to the animals and to the people we work with. This includes public education efforts about animal welfare, responsible guardianship, and the importance of sterilization. We understand that lasting change doesn’t happen in isolation. It depends on creating a culture where animals are valued, not discarded. Anjos d’Ajuda isn’t a large organization. We don’t have a big infrastructure or paid staff. What we do have is a deep connection to our community and a strong sense of shared responsibility. Every rescue, every sterilization, every adoption is a step toward a more humane and balanced coexistence between people, animals, and the environment around us. This work can be exhausting, and at times discouraging, but we do it because we believe it matters—and because the animals we serve can’t ask for help on their own.
