About This Cause
The creation of Redes de Desenvolvimento da Maré, a civil society institution, is the result of a long-term engagement of its founders with the community movement in the complex of favelas Maré and, also, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. the actions, researches and ideas developed by Redes da Maré in the different fields of social politics, are based on a common interest of working, in an integrated and extensive way, with Rio de Janeiro’s issues, more specifically, on its popular areas. With this performance strategy, the institution seeks to develop projects based on four pillars: ART, CULTURE, MEMORIES AND IDENTITIES, TERRITORIAL DEVELOPMENT, THE RIGHT TO PUBLIC SECURITY AND ACCESS TO JUSTICE, EDUCATION. We have chosen to act in the most populous complex of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Maré, where approximately 140 thousand people live, divided into 16 communities, in an area occupying little more than 4 km². One of the peculiarities of Redes da Maré is that it was founded by people originally from Maré, who were able to critically reflect about their trajectories in such a way to transform it. In addition to this, Redes possesses a social agenda focused on the Maré’s region, with the participation of local population, generating knowledge and proposing actions that allow concrete improvements to the lives of residents.he themes above were chosen because they represent basic rights that still need to reach the population of the Maré. We believe that, by acting on these fields, we will achieve the structural demands of the people, and guaranteeing basic rights in medium and long-term. This means better quality of life, a reduction in inequalities, mitigation of different forms of violence in the region and better integration with the city. The axes of work have as strategic objectives the following lines of action: mobilization of the residents of the Maré; strengthening local institutions - basically the 16 Neighborhood Association and different leaders involved in Maré’s historic battles; partnerships with different public and private organizations; production and distribution of knowledge about the region; the development of projects that can improve the quality of life of the people; and influencing public policies to secure basic rights for the favelas of Maré. From a methodological perspective, the work of Redes da Maré is based on a process designed to produce knowledge about the region through the formulation of proposals that are transformed into projects and activities. We also work to display the problems of Maré, and to raise funds with different partners in order to facilitate the actions that can benefit all the residents. The first initiative of Redes da Maré founders was the Maré Pre-College Examination Course, a project to prepare poor students for the university entrance exams. This initiative has achieved, over time, concrete results, as more than 1200 residents of Maré managed to enter a University. In 2007, the institution was formalized with the name of 'Redes da Maré', based on the understanding that the exercise of citizenship should be supported by a comprehensive and procedural project. We value the social role of citizens, their collective actions and the respect for differences and diversity, as well as the criticism of social inequalities currently existing in the country and in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, a range of actions was built and strengthened in a way that several local positive experiences weaved. The central idea of the actions is that we live in a city where everyone should have the right to access its resources, regardless of the region where they reside. These actions mainly occurs in the following spaces within the Maré: at the head offices of Redes da Maré, Maré Arts Centre, Lima Barreto Library and Maria Clara Machado Reading Room in Nova Holanda, head office in Vila dos Pinheiros, head offices of the Neighborhood Association in Vila do João and Vila dos Pinheiros, Herbert Vianna Cultural Canvas in Nova Maré, and at the House of Women in Maré, at Parque União. Spaces such as these, allows the development of initiatives that can transform our projects into reality and help fulfill the dreams that inspired the people who created and work at Redes da Maré. They are places for interaction with the local population for sharing experiences, producing knowledge and where everyday work is done to sustain a project of a fairer, more supportive and more equal society for everyone. THE MAIN STRATEGY OF REDES DA MARÉ IS THAT THE POPULATION HERE SHOULD BE ESTIMULATED TO FORM AND IMPLEMENT THE PROPOSED PROJECTS. The idea of gathering and valuing the different experiences of living in the city should lead to a constant exchange of experiences. Indeed, the greatest innovation of the institution is its community character, with a strong presence of residents in its structure and development. From this experience, children, adolescents and young people of Maré can find positive local examples that helps building their social and school trajectories, contributing to the expansion of their social understandings. Redes da Maré has been establishing a series of links with civil society and government institutions: universities, research institutes, public and private bodies and companies, NGOs and individuals; allowing the production of prolonged initiatives in Maré territory. In these years of operation, the institution has been acting as a significant instrument for the overcome of several signs of violations present in Maré slums. Also, Redes keeps contributing to mobilize residents and other agents to build a structured agenda in the field of rights and guarantees for the region. The process that led to the creation of Redes da Maré began in 1997, from the initiative of residents and former residents of the 16 favelas in Maré and of other parts of Rio de Janeiro. Most of this group was part of less than 0.5% who had access to university in the region and also participated of social and community movements to fight for basic rights such as education, health, culture, sanitation, public lighting, safety, among others.
