About This Cause
Ninho – Educational Project is a nonprofit organization that assists low-income families from disadvantaged backgrounds in the suburbs of Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. We provide socioeconomically disadvantaged children with scholarships in high-quality private schools from the 1st grade to high school and offer them an extended program at Ninho to raise their academic standards. We prepare them to excel at taking the National High School Exam (ENEM), a non-compulsory, standardized test to get admitted into the federal higher education system, called Unified Selection System (SISU). Annually, Ninho admits ten new students and commits to promote their education and support their families. We do that by offering preventative, responsive, and practical support to them. We value their culture and enhance their capacity to promote the healthy development of all family members. In addition, we facilitate partnerships and encourage volunteering to better support their communities. In return, the admitted family must commit to: Providing their children with all the necessary conditions for their full development. Respecting Ninho's vision, mission, and values. Working on behalf of Ninho's community. Currently, we assist 29 families with the following average characteristics: 4-member families, mostly people of color; parents who have not finished high school and work as low-level laborers in low-paid jobs. Their household's gross monthly income is approximately two minimum wages — the Brazilian monthly minimum wage in 2020 is roughly US$ 180 — which means that these families live on less than US$ 3 per person per day*. Against this disadvantaged background, Ninho has envisioned an alternative to the current educational system to break the cycle of generational poverty and bring about lasting and irrevocable social change. That is our vision. Solidarity, impact, accountability, and sustainability are our values. Our mission is to educate these children, support their families, and strengthen their communities. And we accomplish this by holding to stringent accounting, cost-effectiveness, and long-term sustainability principles. We act for our community's common good, adopt an ethos of visibility and transparency, and use donations efficiently. To preserve our independence, we never take any money from the government, political parties, or any ideological group. Our work relies entirely on donations that come from reliable companies and individuals. We are helping these children, but we can not do that without you. Give only once or donate monthly. Please, access our booklet "Neste we are all" to get more information about the program and donation alternatives. Booklet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10U2CuaZkmhvXWVk7Xk5FSo8_58fD9D5g/view
