Mission Statement

Black Jaguar Foundation mission is to restore the balance between nature and humankind to improve the lives of all of us and of all future generations on our planet. BJF has an ambitious goal: to support the realization of the Araguaia River Biodiversity Corridor. By planting 1.7 billion native trees, in close partnership with local communities, we will bring back biodiversity, improve access to natural resources, promote social and economic development, and preserve our planet for future generations. We all have the power to change. Let's make history... Together!

About This Cause

Black Jaguar is an international non-profit organization, headquartered in the Netherlands and with its core mission in Brazil. And the search for the black jaguar has been the origin and symbol of the Black Jaguar since, in 2009, Ben Valks, our founder, tried to film it for a documentary. But what he came across was the advance of deforestation on its natural habitat – and then he became a social entrepreneur. This inspired all of us at Black Jaguar, and it also became our purpose: restoring balance between nature and humanity. And this is our role: we are restoring, in partnership with communities and rural producers, the degraded areas along the Araguaia River and the Tocantins River. We are going to reconnect the still preserved areas of the Cerrado to the Amazon so that biodiversity can be restored and thrive in this ecological corridor. This will generate a huge environmental impact, but also social and economic impacts: by restoring 1 million hectares in Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) and Legal Reserves (RL), we will generate more than 20 thousand jobs for local communities and promote the restoration economy. And the protagonists of this story are the rural landowners of the Araguaia communities. Our ecological restoration mission is being carried out under the context of the Brazilian Forest Code - the Native Vegetation Protection Act. We offer the technical knowledge and resources for the environmental regularization of your properties. In return, they protect the newly restored areas, committing to their preservation, and ceding the benefits associated with carbon sequestration to supporters of restoration activities. These environmental benefits will also go beyond the borders of each of these rural properties, translating into a more competitive, more inclusive, and much more sustainable production chain. Community Support and Technical Quality are our strengths, and the Black Jaguar Restoration Cycle is the key to bringing nature back: from the first contact with the communities to the 3 years of care after planting. Now in 2022, we are completing the planting of our 1st million trees, and the construction of our third and largest nursery, which will produce 500,000 seedlings starting this year. And now in 2022 we were selected in the Caixa Florestas program, to plant our 2 million trees. With this, we are heading towards the restoration of 6 thousand hectares by 2025. None of this would be possible without our community of partnerships: our donors, our rural, technical and institutional partners, and the powerful community of Araguaia. We believe in partnering with people and organizations that share our Values, so that we can carry out our mission in the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor in a truly sustainable way. Today, our big challenge is to raise 10 million reais to keep 2 million trees healthy. As we always say, its much more than planting a tree, over 17 steps from the seedling production, to the preparation of the soil of degraded areas, and planting. This takes around 80% of the resources granted by our major sponsors. But after theses steps, it is fundamental that we maintain these areas safe and monitored, so the forests and the ecosystem can truly thrive. We know this is a massive mission, but this is the Decade of Restoration. The Decade of Action. Let's make history – TOGETHER!
