Mission Statement

Associação Onçafari is a Brazilian non-profit association established in 2011 by Mario Haberfeld with the mission to conserve Brazilian wildlife through ecotourism and scientific research. Initially focused on the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland, Onçafari pioneered the habituation of jaguars for ecotourism, enabling visitors to observe jaguars in their natural habitat, preserving nature and fostering sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. Over the years, Onçafari has expanded its efforts to other biomes, including the Amazon, Mata Atlantica, and the Cerrado, developing programs to protect other endangered species, contributing to the creation of ecological corridors, developing education programs, integrated fire management initiatives, and advocacy. Through partnerships with local communities, private entities, and government agencies, Onçafari has become a leading force in wildlife conservation in Brazil, combining science with community engagement to ensure the long-term preservation of important ecosystems. Today Onçafari is present in 15 bases of conservation helping protect over 2.5 million acres of land.

About This Cause

Associação Onçafari was set up to promote environmental conservation and contribute to socio-economic development through ecotourism and scientific research. Today, our work strives to conserve biodiversity in various Brazilian biomes with an emphasis on jaguars and maned wolves. We operate in six different sectors of conservation, each one addressing the specific aspects required to preserve the environment: Ecotourism Through the income generated by visitors, the residents and landowners have come to appreciate the indigenous species and function as conservation protagonists in the ecosystem where they live and work. Onçafari Ecotourism works to make animals, such as the jaguar and the maned wolf, familiar with the presence of vehicles. As the animals become accustomed to the presence of the safari cars, they no longer see them as a threat and become more comfortable, which facilitates the development of ecotourism in the region. Encounters with jaguars and wolves allow visitors to learn more about the species by their growing awareness of the importance of these predators in nature, and becoming involved in their conservation process. Part of the awareness campaign includes lectures on the species and other animals that live in the same biome. Apart from the talks delivered to guests visiting Onçafari, lessons are given at different schools, as well as at Brazilian and foreign universities. Science Onçafari Science aims to: monitor the behavior of jaguars and maned wolves during tourism activities; constantly evaluate the health status of animals; develop research in ecology and physiology, increasing the scientific knowledge about these species and enhancing their protection. Education The objective of Onçafari Education is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity through lectures, field activities, events, and assistance in recording films and documentaries. Rewild Onçafari Rewild was structured in partnership with CENAP and ICMBio. The objective of these research projects was to reintroduce jaguars into their natural habitat, an important tool for the recovery of endangered populations. Social Onçafari Social interacts directly with the local communities within which our projects operate Forests The objective of Onçafari Forests is to conserve areas of ecological interest. Philanthropists donate properties that contain native forests, or are under regeneration, to the Onçafari Association. We then undertake maintenance of the area with the prime objective of protecting it in order to provide shelter or safe passage to local wildlife. We also actively participate in the creation of new Conservation Units, whether in the private (RPPNs) or public sector (federal, state or municipal). This includes providing technical viability studies and coordinating the interaction between all stakeholders.
