Mission Statement
We work towards improving accesibility and performance of bone marrow transplantation in Brazil.
About This Cause
AMEO (Bone Marrow Association) is a CSO founded in 2002 with the mission of improving accessibility and the performance of bone marrow transplantation in Brazil. Our first activity was contributing to the formation of the Brazilian National Registry of Volunteer Bone Marrow Donors (REDOME), which has since grown significantly. When AMEO started enlisting, REDOME had only 12,000 volunteer donors. Now it’s the third-largest registry in the world, with 5 million donors. AMEO was a pioneer in this area, and its work and results have been recognized and awarded. Since then, AMEO has expanded its activities, initiating numerous projects in the fields of social assistance, education, and data collection. Our Aid Home, open since 2010, aims to assist lower-income families with members currently undergoing bone marrow transplantation. This includes providing medical and material aid to those living in Greater São Paulo, offering lodging for those who need to come to the city for treatment, and promoting public awareness through talks, videos, and educational material. Through our Transplantation Care Home, we seek to speed up the lengthy Brazilian Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) queue, assisting with an early patients discharge model by offering adequate and free infrastructure. Our house has all in place to provide safety, leisure and health to its patients, including the provisions of services in psychology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social assistance. Working with our partner hospital, we expect to increase its number of yearly HSCTs by 30% to 40%, optimizing the use of hospital beds, reducing the existing queue of patients and promoting this model as an alternative solution to existing problems. Between 2019 and 2020, AMEO also promoted a program to train data managers to better understand, collect and report transplant information to their hospitals, as well as to national and international transplantation records. At the end of the trainment, AMEO received and audited the collected data, developing a platform to organize and publish it, which took the form of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Map. This first-rate, open source of information serves as an important tool to assist patients and families, healthcare professionals and institutions, the government, and even the industry. Educate to Donate offers a program for schools with the aim of advocating for the idea of blood donation as an act of citizenship. Through pedagogical strategies including performances and research, the AMEO team discusses the systematic shortages in Brazilian blood centers and the need of obtaining donors committed with blood donation. Among our past projects is also Coach to Cure, which consisted in the development of educational material aiming at qualifying, training and improving the abilities of professionals that work in care homes for the assistance of patients before, during and after bone marrow transplants. The final objective was creating a multiplier effect, working towards the education and instrumentalization of the patients and family members themselves. Although the project ended in 2017, the material has since continued to be produced and distributed. Our vision is to be an institution staffed with people specialized in their respective areas, able to create and develop projects that contribute to Bone Marrow Transplantation in Brazil, always aligned with our mission and values. We also aim to be a reference center, from the recruitment of donors to direct attention given to patients and Transplant Centers. We want to be recognized by public opinion as a decisive factor in the functioning of the Brazilian Bone Marrow Transplant Program and the cooperation of involved parties, enabling to achieve the best results. To attain this and implement present and future projects, we seek financial autonomy through your support.
