IRESCO (Institute for Research, Socio-economic Development and Communication) is a non-governmental organization based in Cameroon, which was founded in 1993 by a group of multi-disciplinary researchers. The institute is one of Cameroon’s leading independent research institutes, conducting research, managing programmes and projects to promote better health and quality of life. The three major endemic diseases, AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis and also water-based diseases have been in the organization’s focus since the beginning. IRESCO is an organization that utilizes social sciences to address health, environmental and educational issues for the African population and beyond. IRESCO launches a variety of projects and programmes, including intervention programmes in the fields like HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and family planning, malaria, water and sanitation and determines the appropriate form to tackle these issues. The mission of IRESCO is to undertake research in the areas of social and behavioral sciences to promote development efforts in Cameroon and throughout Africa. IRESCO seeks to improve development efforts by contributing empirically-based information and insight so that development interventions may be designed and implemented in a more effective and efficient manner to have a significant impact on the African population. IRESCO is primarily involved in research to design and plan appropriate health interventions for Cameroon. The strategic areas of IRESCO interventions revolve around research and Behavior Change Communication (BCC) although research dominates the overall proportion of projects. Research activities include project and program evaluation (planning, monitoring and evaluation including data quality and rapid service quality assessments), quantitative and qualitative studies (KAP studies, opinion surveys, and socio-anthropological studies) and market research (socio-economic indicators, consumption habits, and the effectiveness of distribution networks). Major IRESCO’s donors include international organizations like World Bank, UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO, British High Commission, GIZ, Family Health International, The Global Fund, PSI and so on.
