Mission Statement

The mission of United Way for the City of Kawartha Lakes is to build a strong community and improve lives in Haliburton and Kawartha Lakes. Vision: Bring communities together to ensure everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

About This Cause

We focus on three priority areas, Poverty to Possibility: moving people out of poverty, meeting basic human needs (food, shelter and employment); All That Kids Can Be: improving access to early childhood learning and development programs, helping kids do well at school and completing high school, making healthy transitions into adulthood and post secondary education; Healthy People, Strong Communities: improving access to social and health related support services, supporting citizen and community engagement, supporting all citizens through opportunities and hope, independent living, intervention and prevention. We work in collaboration with other not-for-profits on issues of poverty reduction. This would include implementing poverty reduction strategies around food security, housing, education, social inclusion, mental health, early years intervention and transportation. Our United Way has a special focus on food security through Edwin Binney's Community Farm and Education Centre, our food security farm in Lindsay. We grow fresh produce that is then donated to food banks and food programs in Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. We also offer food literacy programming for children and youth, welcoming schools, summer camps and other groups to the farm for workshops to learn about where your food comes from, how it is grown and issues around food insecurity.
