RIBBON COMMUNITY SOCIETY

Mission Statement

Ribbon Community supports and empowers our communities in overcoming the impacts of HIV and HIV stigma.

About This Cause

Ribbon Community was founded as AIDS Vancouver in 1983, and is one of the longest serving AIDS service organization in Canada. Inspired by the input of gay men on the frontline of this crisis in New York City, a group of gay men came together in response to what we now know as HIV, at a time when community members were getting AIDS diagnoses, before the virus that causes it had a name. For over 40 years, the organization has continued to provide trusted space and information related to HIV prevention for our communities, as well as care and support for people living with HIV. At a Special General Meeting on February 6, 2023, the AIDS Vancouver membership endorsed a consultation process to revise the mission, vision, values statement, and brand, including our name and logo. The goal was to allow AIDS Vancouver to continue to support people living with HIV for many years to come. Today, AIDS Vancouver is Ribbon Community, and has a renewed purpose and values that are pivotal to the organization's work. This change is a response to the realities of HIV in 2024. It is also an huge opportunity to continue AIDS Vancouver's legacy, support the generation that built AIDS Vancouver as they age, offer more leadership opportunities for people living with HIV, and celebrate the full diversity of our communities.
