Mission Statement
Alberta University of the Arts is a diverse and inclusive community committed to leading education and research in creative practices.
About This Cause
Founded in 1926, the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) has become a significant contributor to visual culture in Canada and around the world. The college was known for its world-class facilities, award-winning faculty, and the talent and professionalism of its graduates. Originally called the Alberta College of Art (ACA), the college was initially part of what is now the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). While the two campuses still border each other, ACA officially separated from SAIT in 1985 to become an autonomous, free-standing, publicly funded art and design college. In response to the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, AUArts opened the doors to its Indigenous resource centre, the Lodgepole Center in the Fall of 2016. Named and blessed by an Elder’s Advisory Council, the space is an inclusive venue for traditional and contemporary teachings in Indigenous culture. As a place of cultural research, we are all colleagues on a journey of discovery while enhancing our leadership role within the cultural field. We aspire only to the highest level of excellence in what we endeavor, measured not by our past accomplishments but by our imaginations and what is humanly possible. AUArts will be extremely proud to celebrate its Centennial anniversary in 2026.
