About This Cause
Boys & Girls Club of Greater Victoria is a non-profit organization helping children and youth discover, develop and achieve their best potential for over 59 years. As a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada - the largest youth serving organization in Canada, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Victoria shares the mission locally to provide safe, supportive places for children and youth to belong, experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. A survey by Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada revealed that 69% of Boys & Girls Club alumni say that because of the programs and support they received, Boys & Girls Club “saved their life”. What makes Boys & Girls Club of Greater Victoria so successful in changing lives? • Our adult to youth ratios are low so we keep individualized support and mentoring high • We build on each youth’s strengths, developing character and capability • Our asset-building focus includes positive relationship skills, life skills competencies, leadership, physical activity, learning skills, values and self-esteem, which are key factors in the likelihood of engaging in health-enhancing practices throughout their lifetime. • We feed all of our kids nutritious meals and snacks, which for some is often their only healthy food of the day • Our doors are open and, no one is turned away We help youth who… • Need a safe, supportive place to belong and be engaged • Live high-risk lifestyles • Live in poverty • Are facing jail time • Are homeless • May be teen parents • Are challenged by issues of mental health or addiction For parents who are experiencing challenges with their youth… We understand that parenting is very complex. Part of our commitment to helping children in our community is to education and support parents as they undertake the most important job of all – raising their families. So we provide programs that help them build their confidence and skills to help their kids negotiate the challenges they face in today’s world. For all youth… We are a ‘good place to be’ – before school, after school and in the evenings. When school is out Boys & Girls Club is in! A place where they can have fun, feel respected and can discover who they are, who they could be and learn those skills that will help them along the way. Youth will learn how to believe in themselves and experience the possibility that their dreams really can come true
