Mission Statement
Halifax Developmental Centre is a charitable, licensed, fully inclusive child care facility for children ages 18 months to 7 years that specializes in individual programs for children with special needs.
About This Cause
Halifax Developmental Centre for Early Learning (HDCEL) is a not-for-profit organization located in the North End of Halifax. Since 1967, our Centre has offered early childhood education and inclusive programming for children ages 18 months to 9 years. We offer enhanced staff-to-child ratios with highly trained staff, visual supports, wheelchair lifts, adaptive technologies, and Snoëzelen (multi-sensory) rooms so that all children can participate in our programs and reach their full potential in a truly inclusive environment. Over the years, the demand for our inclusive programming has dramatically increased. We receive calls daily from parents, early interventionists, and psychologists seeking support for children who have been turned away from other programs. We are full to the brim, with such a lengthy waiting list that it will take years for some children to be accepted into our program. We are committed to building a community where everyone has equal opportunities. We have begun providing consultation and training for other Early Childhood Educators to help them create more inclusive classrooms. Despite this, there are many children with special needs waiting for early learning opportunities. In an effort to support more families in our community, we are working to expand and improve our services. At HDCEL, we recognize that inclusive programs not only benefit children with special needs and their families, but also typically developing children as well. We dream of more multi-sensory spaces to help children learn to self-regulate. We dream of parent support groups, playgroups, and family outreach. We dream of no child being left behind. We strive to make our programs affordable and accessible to all families, which makes our fundraising efforts of high importance in ensuring the quality of our programs. We rely on the support of our funders and community partners to continue offering this unique, high-quality program that benefits so many children and families.
