Mission Statement
Effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes
About This Cause
Since 1949, the John Howard Society of Windsor and Essex County has worked to keep the humanity in justice. By supporting the people whose lives are affected by our criminal justice system, we strive for effective, just and humane responses to crime and its causes. Over the years, the Society has worked to build safer communities through evidence-based programs and services. We promote practical, equitable policies, raising awareness of the root causes of crime and call on our community to share responsibility for addressing them. Within the criminal justice system we work toward the fair treatment of all. As the system evolves to reflect our changing society, we ensure that no one is left behind. The Society has a range of programs available for justice-involved individuals at all stages of the system. Not all of the Society’s programs are funded and rely on donations from members of the community to continue. Many of the Society’s clients have limited social skills and poor anger management is a barrier to becoming successful in education, employment and relationships. Some individuals’ ability to manage their emotions is associated with the occurrence of aggression, intimidation and anti-social behaviour. The New Leaf program offers a cognitive behavioural anger management program for women and men. The program was carefully researched and developed and reviewed for efficacy by prominent criminologists in the field. The program is offered in a group setting with 10 educational sessions. The objectives of the sessions are to help participants understand anger as an emotion, to identify non-productive means of coping and to learn productive and positive anger management strategies. Important components of the anger management program include communication skills training, problem-solving and relaxation techniques. Your donation will sponsor a woman or man to complete the New Leaf program and support their quest for a more productive and harmonious life.
