Mission Statement
We provide housing options and associated services to support the wellness and dignity of those living with HIV/AIDS in a community that is tailored to their specific needs.
About This Cause
McLaren Housing Society works with families and individuals who have low/limited income, are inadequately housed or are at risk of homelessness. In addition, they may require community resources to maintain suitable housing or shelter based on individual needs. Stable housing is key to helping people stay healthy. Stress related to homelessness and poverty can exacerbate symptoms and accelerate disease progression. Having a home with access to water, food, and refrigeration can make following complex regimens possible. Many people with HIV and AIDS find it impossible to continue working, leading to inadequate housing at a time when a clean, quiet and private home environment is more critical than ever to sustaining physical and emotional health. As Canada’s first housing program for people with HIV/AIDS, McLaren has grown from the original McLaren House, which offered accommodation for five people in 1987, to providing housing and support for over 320 people, including families in the Lower Mainland. We manage over 180 subsidized housing units directly or in partnership with other organizations. Our head office on Helmcken Street provides housing for 32 individuals who can live independently. Our building on Howe Street is a testament to our commitment to providing comprehensive support. With 110 units of social and supported housing for individuals, couples, and families living with HIV/AIDS, we ensure that even those with a history of inadequate housing and complex health concerns find a safe haven. Our building attendants, life skills workers, and support workers are always available to assist residents with connecting to health care professionals, housekeeping issues, and money management. Moreover, our staff and residents manage a community kitchen and other social programs, fostering a sense of community and support. The McLaren Portable Subsidy Programs are a testament to our commitment to individual empowerment. These programs provide monthly rent supplements to HIV-positive individuals and families, enabling them to live in a community of their choice. With 120 participants, some of these ‘portables’ include a support component, enhancing life skills to find and maintain safe, affordable housing.
