About This Cause

HISTORY: We are the little library that does BIG things for little kids! Founded in 1929, The Montreal Children’s Library is an independent library focused on the right of literacy for all of Montreal’s children. For 90 years, we have provided FREE access to books, educational programs and literacy opportunities to children living in areas of the city where few municipal library services exist. Currently, we are located in the linguistically and culturally diverse neighborhood of Saint-Michel. THE BASICS: We are open 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday), from 10am-6pm, with extended hours for certain programs and activity. Our Parent Child Mother Goose Program also runs 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday), at 10am each day at a different outreach site across the city (including community centers, schools, and churches). PROGRAMS/SERVICES: Not only do we provide traditional bilingual Library services, but we also offer free programs such as Story Time, Author and Illustrator visits, after school homework help, and activities, such as Science Club, Chess Club, Arts and Crafts, music, Improvisation Club, and Video Game Club. We also launched three new programs in 2018 – Lego Club, Journalism Club, and an Introduction to Coding workshops. In January 2020 we are launching a new program for teenagers that will allow create new mentorship, skill building, and engagement opportunities especially for teens at our location in St. Michel. PARENT CHILD MOTHER GOOSE PROGRAM: Almost 25 years ago, the Montreal Children's Library brought the Toronto-based Parent Child Mother Goose Program® to Montreal. This pre-literacy program provides parent-child interaction, language acquisition, and socialization skills to young children between the ages of 3 months and three years. Currently there are six sites throughout Montreal, each providing free 10-week sessions to parents and their young children. Sessions are held in spring, fall, and winter. Specially trained staff teach songs and rhymes to parents and children alike, emphasizing the oral traditions of stories. These sessions are invaluable in helping new mothers (and fathers) bond with their babies in a nurturing positive way. WHO WE SERVE: Many of the children who pass through our doors speak neither English nor French at home. They are often from families newly-immigrated to Canada and to Quebec from countries far away. Children in the areas we serve often have few of the advantages of children in more affluent neighborhoods and have come to count on us to help “level the playing field” for their education. Without us, many would never have the exposure to the types of extracurricular activities we offer them, activities that make for a well-rounded child, activities that inspire and awaken the imagination. THE VALUE OF DONATIONS: It is important to note that the Montreal Children’s Library is a Registered Charity of the Canada Revenue Agency. We rely on the generosity of our community of donors to provide for more than 80% of our annual operating budget.
