About This Cause
The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) stands as British Columbia's Indigenous Public Post-Secondary Institute. It traces its origins to the collaborative efforts of the Nicola Valley founding bands, including the Coldwater Indian Band, Nooaitch Indian Band, Shackan Indian Band, Upper Nicola Indian Band, and Lower Nicola Indian Band. NVIT's foundation is rooted in Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Being, and Doing, fostering an educational environment that empowers Indigenous peoples and their allies. Through its commitment to Indigenous knowledge and values, NVIT equips individuals with the education, resilience, and leadership necessary to foster reconciliation, strengthen, and advance Indigenous communities. NVIT's Vision: • y ̓ ehetci ~ x̌słcawt - our spirit, essence, emotions, Intelligence are good NVIT’s Mission: • sƛ ̓ əq ̓ méyt ~ nak ̓ʷúl̓ aʔmnt - sharing our traditional ways NVIT’s Values also align with our four strategic directions: • zəʕ̓wzo ʕ̓wt ~ k̓ʷckʷact ̓ - Strength - Academic Excellence. NVIT ignites curiosity, highlights opportunities and supports growth in a welcoming, inclusive, safe place • nk̓seytkn ~ nəqsílt - The All, People You Travel with / Community Relevance. Responding to community needs, NVIT provides access to educational opportunities that champion community advancement • sneɁm ~ m̓ ayntwíxʷ - Song/Spirit / Organizational Effectiveness. NVIT is an accountable and transparent organization Our student body comprises approximately 80% Indigenous individuals. Considering Canada's colonial legacy and its impact on Indigenous communities, many of our students and their families have endured the traumas of the residential school system and the 60's scoop, which involved the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families. The historical colonial policies of the Canadian government have significantly disrupted Indigenous family and community structures. In recognition of these challenges, it is paramount that our institution offers comprehensive support services tailored to the unique needs of Indigenous students. Access to on-campus counselors who are equipped to deliver mental health and wellness sessions infused with Indigenous cultural sensitivity and knowledge is essential. Your generous donation will enable us to enhance our mental health services on campus, ensuring that Indigenous students receive the vital support they require. Additionally, your contribution will facilitate the provision of scholarships and grants to cover tuition fees and living expenses for Indigenous students who may not have access to funding from other sources.
