Mission Statement
The Roberts/Smart Centre is a tertiary provider and provincial leader in the delivery of inclusive, community-based, individualized treatment and clinical services in both official languages to improve the lives of youth and their families from across Ontario living with complex mental health and behavioural needs.
About This Cause
Roberts/Smart Centre (RSC) provides treatment and support for severely troubled, behaviorally and emotionally challenged youth with exceptional psychosocial needs, and their families. Parents, caregivers and siblings need support as well, as caring for a child with intensive mental health needs can be exhausting and overwhelming. Mental health problems appear in children and youth from all walks of life but there are significantly higher rates for those coming from socio-economically depressed, Indigenous and racialized backgrounds. The potential consequences – including poor academic achievement, failure to complete high school, self-harm and substance abuse, conflict with the law, an inability to live independently or hold a job, health problems and suicide – affect children, youth, their families/caregivers, schools, and communities as a whole. The most serious of these illnesses can continue into adulthood, affecting functioning and productivity in the community and the healthy development of the next generation. We provide treatment, support, information, expertise and resources supporting the advancement of the youth’s social, emotional, behavioral and mental health. All programs are integrated for streamlined access, treatment and supports and include open and secure live-in treatment programs, in-home services and family education/support programs, school programs, expanded day treatments and community programming. We are often referred to as the last line of defense for youth experiencing complex mental health challenges. Our youth travel from communities all across Ontario. In fact, by the time they reach us, many have accessed 40 or more different mental health services. Regardless of where they started, they all have one thing in common. Their lives are a struggle and they need a safe place and specialized treatment to help them put the pieces back together. The overall goal of our programs is to provide youth and their families, with the support they need – in the way they need it - to help them heal, learn, grow and live their full potential. RSC also leads an anti-human trafficking collaborative in Ottawa, Creating Opportunities and Resources Against the Trafficking of Humans (CORATH), which provides 24/7 treatment, education, and support for trafficking survivors and their families.
