Mission Statement
Scarborough Women’s Centre empowers women to become economically and emotionally independent for future success and to strengthen their local communities, free of violence. The Centre delivers programs and services to promote positive change for women in a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment. Our goal is to provide information, education and support services to women transitioning away from abuse and isolation, towards economic and emotional independence. By developing a strong foundation of emotional health, life skills, and personal goal planning, women can make a brighter future for themselves and their families.
About This Cause
Scarborough Women’s Centre is a unique community resource in Toronto East that welcomes women needing assistance to empower themselves, to become economically and emotionally independent, free of violence and abuse. We provide information, education and support services to assist women to overcome abuse, poverty, isolation, newcomer integration and other issues of marginalization. Women using the Centre are from all walks of life, economic situations, ethno-racial backgrounds and ages. We have touched the lives of 180,000 women and their children since our inception in 1982, and serve 3500 women a year. The Centre received the City of Toronto Mayor's Community Safety Award in recognition of its work with abused women and their children. In addition to the Centre’s onsite services, we run community outreach programs for young women at both high school and university levels, and for women with disabilities, providing workshops on topics like healthy relationships, self-esteem, and leadership. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering our services by phone, webinar and video-conference. The Centre relies on fundraising for half of its income.
