Mission Statement
We’re committed to improving the lives of people with gastrointestinal (GI) and liver conditions, supporting research, advocating for appropriate patient access to healthcare, and promoting GI and liver health.
About This Cause
In 1976, the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research (CSIR) was founded in Vancouver and arose as the first registered charity in Canada to enhance public awareness by providing patient and professional information and funding medical research on a wide array of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders within British Columbia. Along with our sister charity, the Gastrointestinal (GI) Society, we work together to be the leading provider of evidence-based and accessible information of patient resources on a variety of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and disorders, which affect as many as 20 million Canadians. The staff of GI Society run CSIR, but both organizations have a separate board of directors. Some of our programs and services include: Patient Information Pamphlets We publish a complete series of patient information pamphlets that explain an array of complex GI conditions in lay terms, while answering frequently asked questions. We print hundreds of thousands of these valued educational resources annually. BadGut® Lectures These free public forums cover various digestive conditions for patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and other interested individuals across the country. Well-recognized experts give each lecture, and a lively question and answer period always follows. The Inside Tract® | Du coeur au ventre newsletter This quarterly publication discusses emerging research in the GI field, medications, alternative therapies, specific diet and nutrition guidelines, new technologies, Health Canada warnings, and more. Subscription is $20 annually ($30 internationally), which covers our postage cost and supports the production and distribution of valuable digestive health articles. We have the resources, networks, and relationships to ensure that our programs directly benefit communities throughout the province. We continue to be there for patients by providing awareness, education, and support, ultimately helping them become better equipped to make a positive difference in their health.
