Mission Statement
Today’s society seems to demand a two-worker household & as a result, childcare outside of the home has become a most important factor. Now, more than ever before, the dream of extraordinary, quality childcare is at the heart of every concerned, caring and responsible working parent. Our philosophy is to focus on the child first & then build outward from there. Our methods of positive child development appear rather simplistic, but on closer examination one can see that they are well thought out. We continue to value the statement “children’s play is children’s work”. Adequate children’s play ultimately leads to a productive and satisfying adult life and working career. An undue focus on achievement-oriented activities tends to thwart this natural outgrowth of play. One of the primary requirements of our staff is to have a comprehensive understanding of play & its relationship to learning. The basis for our program may be summed up in a list of well-chosen words: Acceptance Nurturing Facilitation Respect Encouragement Conflict Resolution Discovery Empowerment Choices Discipline Reality
About This Cause
OUR PROGRAM We offer a structured, play-based program. The mornings are similar to a pre-school, with art and storytimes, as well as Music, French, movement/gym classes and storytime visits to a neighbourhood seniors’ centre. The afternoons have more free-play times, including outside play, nap and snack times. The structure of routines and activities help build a sense of security and predictability within your child’s environment. The activities offer new, exploratory experiences. WVCDC IS A NON-PROFIT SOCIETY West Vancouver Child Development Centre Association is a non-profit society guided by a constitutional mandate to offer the best possible child care to our community. CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES We offer extra activities to challenge the growing needs of children. Our French, pre-kindergarten, music, gym, storytimes at a local seniors centre and summer fun programs add diversity and an element of excitement and enrichment to our preschool activities. Our preschool program includes stories, songs, and a variety of art-based experiences, free play (indoors and outdoors), and many other opportunities to discover the natural environment. We visit the beach, explore our neighbourhood on foot, and use the transit system. During our Summer Fun Program, children of various ages travel many miles, exploring our beautiful city. We have been to New Westminster Quay, Dundarave beach, Bowen Island and many points in-between. AGE-SPECIFIC PROGRAMS 3-5 Year Old Program: Enrollment is limited to 25 children in this program, with a ratio of 1 staff to 8 children. We offer full time (5 days a week) and part time (2 or 3 days a week) spaces. Infant & Toddler Program: Enrollment in this program is limited to 8 children (under 3 years of age) with a ratio of 1 staff to 4 children. We offer full time (5 days a week) and part time (2 or 3 days a week) spaces. HISTORY 1954 – Wendy House was built through the dedicated efforts of local parents who wished to have a special place for their children to grow and learn. Mrs. Alma Reynolds was the kindergarten teacher who provided her students with many opportunities to learn through music exploration. 1975 – Wendy House became the West Vancouver Daycare Society, delivering child care for the changing needs of the families of West Vancouver. 1991 – The Centre underwent another name change: we became the West Vancouver Child Development Centre. We had four full-time staff offering care for 28 children on a full and part time basis. 1996 – Plans began to develop an Infant and Toddler Program. 1998 – With a lot of hard work from parents and staff, the Infant and Toddler room was opened creating 8 more spaces for children under the age of 3. We also welcomed 2 more full time staff members. At Present – We are still providing high quality child care for families on the North Shore. We provide care for over 33 children on a full and part time basis. OUR DEDICATED STAFF We have dedicated personnel, each staff member has or is currently completing a college-accredited program on Early Childhood Education (ECE) Infant toddler and Special Needs. Our staff members are committed to providing the highest quality child care possible. We believe that all children deserve and have a right to a safe, caring and fun environment in which they can reach their full potential. HOW ARE PARENTS INVOLVED? We are a parent participation Centre, which means that parents make up the Board of Directors, as well as provide volunteer support for the Centre throughout the year in many capacities. Board meetings are held once a month, including an Annual General Meeting in September. Throughout the year, we organize parent participation work parties to maintain and improve the facilities. We also engage in fundraising activities to help expand resources for the Centre and children. Finally, we have informal get-togethers for families, such as the Winter Festival and the Family Picnic
