Mission Statement
More young Canadians equipped with the skills to succeed in life.
About This Cause
Our purpose is to help young people successfully transition from youth to adulthood. This is achieved through connecting them to the Award program’s framework, supported by hundreds of volunteer and volunteer mentors. Any and every young person between the ages of 14-24 can participate and achieve an Award by setting personal goals in the areas of community service, physical recreation, skill development and outdoor exploration. Once these goals are achieved, young people are celebrated at the Bronze level by a community leader; at the Silver level, by the Lieutenant Governor; and at the Gold level, by a member of the Royal Family or the Governor General, making it the highest recognition that a young person can receive in Canada…and it’s open to everyone! Our organization links young people across Canada to the opportunities, activities and networks that will provide them the space and support needed in order for them to explore their passions, their talents and live out their true potential. We partner with young offenders centres, schools, youth programs, Cadets, newcomer organizations and indigenous groups to ensure that every young person is provided the opportunity to become the best version of themselves. Our youth development program opportunities are required now more than ever before. In Alberta alone, we currently serve over 4,000 young people. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING "I have become much more involved with my community and I have gained the sense that I am putting myself "out there" more... my involvement with [the Award] has led to the maturity I have and has motivated me to continue the many extra-curricular activities that I am involved with." — Sampson M., Bronze Award Achiever "This Award has pushed me to volunteer more in my community which means that I have more service on my resume which is more appealing to future employers." — Laura L., Silver Award Achiever "All that time in sport has taught me will and motivation are without a doubt, the most important factors in achieving one’s goals… it gave me the opportunity to represent my province at the Canada Games and join the UBC rowing team where I got to train with and learn from future Olympians." — James K., Gold Award Achiever "There were definitely times at which I wanted to quit, when I thought that everything was overwhelming. Although I did struggle, each of those moments allowed me to strengthen my sense of self and learn more about who I am..." — Iman K., Gold Award Achiever "One of the most fascinating things to watch during the program is [the participant’s] ability to be a leader. He can always influence his peers and I enjoy watching his dynamics… I am looking forward to seeing his growth and contributing everything I can towards it." — Ryan “Rubix” De Guzman, Youth Central "The Duke of Ed at the Edmonton Young Offender Centre (EYOC) has given an opportunity to youth to show they can develop new skills and enjoy giving back to the community that they may not have thought was possible given their status in the Justice system." — William Macaoud, Community Transition Coordinator Invest in Canada's greatest resource, its young people. When you donate to the Award, you are helping to make a difference in the lives of young Canadians by providing them the opportunity to explore their potential, take on new challenges, give back to the community, and achieve success. ABOUT THE AWARD The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global program with the goal of challenging, empowering and recognizing young people between the ages of 14 and 24. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award defines what good non-formal education looks like. It provides a tried and tested framework for its delivery in any context where young people might be gathered, and allows achievement to be recognized in a way that is consistent worldwide, giving young people internationally recognized accreditation of their experiences. Each young person who takes part volunteers in their community, learns a skill, improves their physical fitness, and experiences a team adventure in a new environment. Young people do not need to excel to achieve an Award, they simply need to set personally challenging goals for improvement and then strive to reach those goals. A demonstration of commitment will help a young person get out of the Award what they put in: essentially, there are no shortcuts to a real sense of achievement. OUR HISTORY From coast to coast to coast since 1963, we have helped motivate young Canadians to set goals and challenge themselves to take control of their lives and futures. The classroom is not the only place to nurture the potential of one of our country’s greatest natural resources – our youth. We strive to reach young Canadians in communities across the country and provide a platform that helps them chart their individual lives and equips them with important life skills. Today, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award - Canada can be found right across the country, engaging over 42,000 young people and over 2,600 Award Leaders annually. Our program is run in cities, rural and remote areas, through government and independent schools, universities and colleges, and a wide range of organizations such as Cadets, Scouts, Girl Guides, Indigenous youth groups, new immigrant support programs, sports clubs, employers, youth detention centres, and community youth organizations.
