Mission Statement

At the heart of what we do Girls Inc. offers eight signature programs designed just for girls. Girls Inc. is focused on: body image & self-esteem; violence & bullying prevention; leadership & community action; math, science & technology; healthy sexuality & relationships; peer pressure; substance use prevention; media literacy; financial literacy; physical activity & sports participation; and literacy & reading enrichment. Our programs are all based on proven curriculum and target girls of specific age brackets according to four different developmental stages. Our program facilitators are professionally trained and lead girls through a safe, nurturing experience. Girls Inc. programs are offered across Durham Region including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa. We offer comprehensive in-school classes and seminars, after-school programs, weekend workshops, PA Day, March break and summer day camps.

Recognized by the Fraser Institute as one of the top three best-run charities in Canada in education, each year Girls Inc. of Durham provides more than 1,600 girls across Durham Region with life-changing experiences and solutions to the unique challenges girls face. The Girls Inc. Experience consists of people, an environment, and programming that, together, empower girls to succeed. Trained staff and volunteers build lasting, mentoring relationships in girls-only spaces that are physically and emotionally safe and where girls find a sisterhood of support with shared drive, mutual respect, and high expectations. Hands-on, research-based programs provide girls with the skills and knowledge to set goals, overcome obstacles, and improve academic performance. More Than 1 IN 10 women live in poverty. 78% of GIRLS are unhappy with their bodies by age 17. Over 85% of girls age 15-24 drink in excess. 1 IN 4 GIRLS experience some form of sexual abuse before age 18. Girls Inc. meets these challenges by helping girls explore and celebrate their strengths, their voices, who they are today, and who they will become. Girls Inc. equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and grow up healthy, educated and independent. Girls build confidence and embrace positive decision-making to take charge of their health and well being, and achieve academic, personal and career goals.
