About This Cause
THE NEED The barriers girls face even today in Canada are real and profound. Girls growing up in poverty are uniquely affected. • More than 1 in 10 children live in poverty. 1 • Over 50% of girls say they wish they were someone else. 2 • 1 in 4 teen girls drink in excess. 3 • 1 in 4 girls experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. 4 GIRLS INC. AS A SOLUTION Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy. Out-of-school time programming, in partnership with schools and at Girls Inc. centers, is delivered through a network of 82 local organizations in 350 cities and 1,200 sites. Our comprehensive approach to whole girl development equips girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers. • Girls receive programming in healthy living, academic enrichment, and life skills instruction. We support girls who need us the most – girls who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunities, experiences, or role models to lead fulfilling and productive lives and break the cycle of poverty. • Nearly 70% live in households earning $30,000 a year or less; 1 in 10 come from households earning $10,000 or less Three elements are critical to successful outcomes: • People - trained staff and volunteers who build lasting, mentoring relationships • Environment - girls-only, physically and emotionally safe; where there is a sisterhood of support, high expectations, and mutual respect • Programming - research-based, hands-on and minds-on, age-appropriate, meeting the needs of today’s girls We also tackle the systemic barriers that affect the conditions in which all girls are growing up by: • translating our work with girls in the field into powerful advocacy to improve their opportunities to succeed. • working to increase girls’ access to meaningful educational opportunities (particularly for those from under-resourced communities), prevent and curtail physical and sexual violence, secure better outcomes for girls in the juvenile justice system, and ensure girls get the knowledge and resources they need to lead healthy lives. • engaging girls themselves as well as local leaders and other stakeholders to push for policy changes that promote girls’ rights and opportunities.
