About This Cause

Programs and Services 1. BSO Commercial Division is a series of workshops, which provide employment and educational opportunities for Adults with intellectual disabilities.  Woodwork Department– Our primary product is pallets, individuals and Staff are involved in cutting and assembling wood pallets, which are sold throughout Southern Manitoba. As well, BSO has been approved by the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency, to provide heat-treated wood packaging for export purposes. We are also well known for custom woodwork, fencing, and furniture construction.  Front Shop - We provide services to many local businesses in the form of contract work. These services range in variety from paper box construction, negative stripping, electrical wire assembly, paper shredding, rug weaving etc. Along with providing these in house services, we often have a number of Clients, who along with staff, work in various businesses throughout Altona to assist with special projects and peak workloads.  Opportunities Program – The Opportunities program is designed to meet the needs of people whose work options are more limited. The emphasis of the Opportunities Program is on communication, life skills, social skills, music therapy, physiotherapy, and recreational activities. Work opportunities are also available for people with the interest and ability.  Life Skills – Many individuals are involved in our BSO life skills program. We focus on skills such as meal preparation, cleaning, laundry and bicycle safety. We also have sign language training each morning for a half-hour, this has assisted communication greatly within verbal and non-verbal people.  Supported Employment – We currently have 15 people working within the community in full time and part time employment. We provide support to these individuals in the form of work place visits, mentoring, and also act as the employer liaison.  Service Shop – The services we provide here are combine chain assembly and Recycling. We assemble combine feeder and elevator chains for A&I Loewen Manufacturing of Altona. Bolt packages are also prepared and packaged which accompany the chains for installation. Recycling continues to grow, we currently provide blue box pickup services weekly for the town of Altona, we also pick cardboard from local businesses twice per week. The RM of Rhineland also receives monthly pickups in most of the outlying villages including Rosenfeld and Gretna. The recycled goods are then sorted, bailed and delivered to Winkler for processing. A unique part of our recycling service is glass crushing, all glass is crushed and reused as base in the towns various concrete projects. We also are a drop off site for e-waste, which we transport to Gateway Resources in Winkler  Lawn Mowing – BSO provides lawn care services to the town of Altona many local businesses as well as private homes.  The John Unger Seniors Centre – This program and centre has been developed to assist people’s transition from work to retirement. The centre provides activities ranging from pool to crafts, watching TV, naps, bingo and many planned outings in and around our community.  The primary funding source is CLDS. Program costs and capital purchases are offset by income generated through workshop activities. Residential Services BSO currently operates 10 homes in Altona. The supports of each home are designed to meet the specific need of each Individual and promote a maximum level of independence. Supported Independent Living This term refers to support that is provided to people living in their own homes and apartments throughout Altona and Morris. People have a varying degree of ability and independence. Staff offer supports primarily during evenings and weekends to assist or develop skills in areas where a person requires assistance. It may be grocery shopping, laundry, or recreational. Our staff functions to create opportunities for people to become fully integrated in the community and maximize independence.
