About This Cause
The vision of the CFBTS is to support initiatives that will improve outcomes and quality of life for burn survivors and individuals affected by other severe skin injuries. Our goal is to foster advancements in burn treatment, research, awareness, care and education. To achieve this, we have been providing funds through the Calgary Health Trust for continuing education and for acquisition of state-of-the-art clinical equipment to ensure the very best primary burn care at the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Centre (CFBTC) at the Foothills Hospital since 1978. The CFBTC is the primary burn treatment referral centre for burn patients in southern Alberta, southeastern British Columbia, southwestern Saskatchewan and northern Montana. More recently, the CFBTS recognized that creating opportunities in research to develop innovative treatments to regenerate the skin would be necessary to realize our ultimate objective. To this end, we invested $1 million dollars over 5 years (2015-2020) in order to develop the CFBTS Chair in Skin Regeneration and Wound Healing, which is currently held by Dr. Jeff Biernaskie. Our Firefighters know first-hand the aesthetic and functional impact skin injuries can have on the survivors of a burn. Formed in 1978, the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society has raised money to help alleviate the pain and suffering inflicted by these horrific events. The Society has embarked on a new mission to enhance the lives of these burn survivors. After consultation with the Doctors of the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Centre at the Foothills Medical Centre, the Society’s focus this year is to raise $200,000 to purchase a Carbon Dioxide Laser in partnership with Calgary Health Trust. This cutting edge technology is the next essential step in the treatment of post burn scar tissue rehabilitation, increasing the quality of life to our survivors.
